Word, should've been higher on GP.

I was having dinner at the home of two extremely intelligent women who are both college professors and longtime baseball fans, and ESPN was on in the background. When Cabrera was announced MVP, the following was said:

Woman A: Good. Triple Crown always deserves the MVP. Good.

Woman B: Agreed. You know, they'd made some noise about Trout being better at defense and such, but he's a rookie, so he still has a lot to prove before he can get an MVP.

Woman A: Exactly. Show me something next year and the year after. Rookies should never win MVP.

Woman B: It's like a freshman winning the Heisman. Unless you rush for 3,000 yards, you should never win the Heisman as a freshman. Pay your dues.

What are the sabre-nuts here & around the world really mad at? Is it because you feel that Cabrera only won because of the traditional Triple Crown, and/or because you feel Trout did not win it because of the sabremetric factor/being a rookie? I feel like Cabrera's actual performance, particularly down the stretch, is lost in all of that controversy.

Can it be proven that Trout's magnificent defense prevented X amount of runs, gave them Y amount of wins & was indeed the backbreaker in this MVP dispute?

Cabrera had almost 100 more ABs, and practically carried his team into the playoffs in Aug & Sept. The stats show it too. I don't see the big deal.

I'm not a hardcore "stat geek" or anything, but I know the disappointing thing for me is that the ways to measure Trout's candidacy aren't really obscure or advanced, so I expected (well, not expected but hoped) the baseball writers would at least have it a bit closer.

I don't have a problem with Miggy, and I stated as soon as he clinched the Triple Crown that he would win the MVP. But the dismissive attitude people have had toward Trout's worthiness and the reflexive worship of the Triple Crown is kind of depressing, because I hate to witness people being militantly stupid.
