Mavs .5 game out of playoffs, chose to tank to maybe keep a fringe top 10 pick

Too bad the in-season tournament doesn't affect draft position in addition to the money payout for the players. Have the teams in the lottery make up the tourney and the winner gets top-5 odds for their pick, at least that way it forces teams tank teams to play for the pick, but then again, a fringe playoff team could tank to get into the tourney for the pick.

How is it throwing a game when you lose in the last minute?
That’s the funny part “Slovenia night” fukked the Mavs. Kidd has to explain every coaching decision including taking out Luka in the second, subbing out Morris when he got hot, and taking out a rookie when he hit a great shot in the half. Why did he give Theo Pinson 31 minutes?

Kidd was too blatant and Cuban was the same jackass who admitted Tanking was a league wide issue in 2018. Then Kidd essentially said “Cuban/Nico told me to do it”.

They literally made rules on tanking and the general idea is “build a bad team, put guys on injured reserve, don’t throw a game”. The league knows it can't stop tanking but it hates when a team is too blatant.

But they tried to win the game

Bulls was clearly the better team

You can't make that argument because Kidd said he was told to tank by the owner/management and he and the players didn't want to do it but they did. This is a open and shut case and “Slovenia night” meant they put Luka in and then pulled him is the most blatant part. They didn't shut a player down before the game they subbed a player out a game and that difference will be what fukks them.

Exactly.... The Mavs might legit be fukked.

It's not shameful. What play-in team actually does anything in the playoffs? 7-8 seeds usually get destroyed in the first round. You better off being in the lottery than swept in the first round.

To be fair, the play-in Lakers in 2021 were probably going to the Finals if AD hadn't gotten hurt. They beat the Warriors and were already 2-1 on the Suns even though Bron was still a bit slow having just come back from injury, and no one else in the West was going to stop them.

A few things are different here and it takes what happened from normal tanking to another level of fukkery that I could see the league being pissed about,

  1. Kidd already confessed that he threw the game at managements request and went beyond the normal “resting player” form of tanking. He made substitution to lose

This is really the only reason it's a big deal. If they had simply done it quieter it wouldn't have gone anywhere. Bulls tanking at the same time is what screwed them lol because then Kidd had to be blatant with it in ADDITION to him and Luka both admitting to it beforehand.

I don't agree the other shyt makes it different because what the Sixers did is exactly the same, they just did it in the offseason. Purposely trading away guys without even getting value back, waiving better players in order to sign lesser players, explicitly drafting guys who won't join the team, and openly calling it all "The Process" the whole 300+ games or whatever it lasted....that's a LOT less competitive than throwing 2 games in a lost season.

As they should. If anybody should be offended it's probably Silver and the players.

For Silver it's a legit slap in the face to make a play-in tournament and have teams try to dodge it.

For the players you don't make it to the end to quit.

No one asked for that Play In

Except this is happening post Hinkie being forced out in 2016, Post Cuban being fined once for talking about Tanking, and post the 2018 Memo when they told teams you can tank a season but don't throw a game. They then told team if we “catch you” throwing a game that is your ass.

I think the Subbing out would have been enough for them to fine the Mavs, but Kidd admitting to it is going to be what leads to the league really punishing the Mavs. It doesn't help that this season was on of those seasons where Cuban was off the meds and being a pest either.

Oh yeah, I think it's worse from a "getting in trouble with the league" perspective. I just don't think it's worse from a "ruining competitive basketball" perspective.

Idiots in the thread are claiming that this is some example of the modern NBA be anti-competitive, when the truth is that teams used to do MUCH worse for pretty much all of NBA history and the league is trying to crack down on it now more than ever.
