There's been a rise the last decade in what I call shallow pretentiousness - where people are so insecure about "snobs" and their validation that they act like being shallow and having childish, simple taste in shyt actually makes them deeper because they "see the forest for the trees" and are "comfortable with themselves" or some other fake-deep bullshyt. And I think nerd culture with the obsession towards children's media becoming the dominant force for media has played a massive part of that.

That's how you get shyt like "The Winter Soldier is a 1970s political thriller" takes :mjlol:

What's funny is the movie stands on its own without that. I watched three days of the condor, which is one movie winter solider is thought to be in the vein of, and its nothing like three days of the condor. making larger connections to flicks like that just makes your movie look weaker in comparison. And Winter Soldier is very dope as is and doesn't even need those type of comparisons.

But like you said, in an effort to elevate it above comic book movie, the press and fellow nerds ran with the narrative.

If you want to elevate something like Winter Soldier or Dark Knight, that's great. but rarely are comic book flicks as complex as movies like Day of the Jackal or Three Days of the Condor.

One reason it's easy to embrace Thor Ragnarok is it hides its more political ambitions under the guise of being a bigger and better produced version of the 80s Flash Gordon flick. There's no pretentiousness in how its made, nor how it's marketed. It just is what it is, proudly wears its influences on its sleeve, and tells anyone who isn't with it to kick rocks.

Exactly...like I can't lie, Winter Soldier is one of my favorite movies period...but let that shyt be what it is.

This is one of my biggest gripes with the comic book films. The characters are about to die or the world is about to end and its nothing but a pure joke fest:unimpressed:

Thats cause they're made for children and people with feeble minds.

how was The irishman not a hit? maybe we have different criteria for what a hit is... now that box office means nothing the lines will continue to blur.

How was it a hit?

It did like 26 mill streaming first week on Netflix.

"El Camino" did around the same (25 mill).

The major difference is, one had Scorsese, Pesci, Deniro, and Pacino.
The other....had Aaron Paul. :mjlol:

"Birdbox" did 40 million.

So "Birdbox" was a hit. "The Irishman"....wasn't a flop, but it damn sure wasn't a hit either. Especially considering the level of talent involved.

Which is fine, a lot of great movies aren't hits. But for Scorsese to act like comic movies are stealing his shine....he never had much box office shine to begin with. He's not a blockbuster type guy. It would be like Ras Kass going on the radio in 1996 claiming if it wasn't for Bad Boy then the Diamond D remix of "Soul On Ice" would get more spins.

It's like....uh, nah man. :dahell:

Frankly, "real cinema is being pushed out in favor of comic movies!" is an especially bizarre hot take considering "Parasite" came out....was a hit, both critically and commercially....permeated pop culture....and won an Oscar. In 2019. So it more seems like people just ain't checking for him. It happens. :manny:

Yeah I mean at the end of the day he’s mad cause he isn’t as relevant as he’d like to be. It’s okay. Father Time always wins. Marvel won’t be around forever and comic movies will be replaced by something else. He’s hurt, and we know who hurt him.

that's not the sole definition of what a hit is. 365 Days got tons of streams on Netflix.. nobody is checking for it now and nobody will ever check for it again.

The irishman got bounce off the awards noms.. Everyone in the industry basically said it was a masterpiece. i wouldn't go that far but it was good and then it got a criterion release after.

That might not mean any significance on the surface.. what it means is it will end up being yet another Scorsese movie that will stand the test of time.

30 years from now people will still be watching The irishman. That means it's a hit.
