I like a lot about this, but six episodes in and they've pretty much dropped the ball on the Spike, Vicious, Julia triangle. That's a pretty major slip and an unfortunate one. This show's got humor and fun, but the serious and darker tones never capture the bleakness that underpins the anime. It just doesn't handle the tonal switch-ups as well and goes too heavy-handed when it shows us their backstories. The anime gave you breadcrumbs and let you piece everything together, the characters were running from their pasts and you felt it that much more whenever the past would catch up to them. This series only has 10 episodes, so the bread crumbs are heavy-handed as hell and it doesn't allow for the build-up.
I still like this joint, but it's different. It's lighter...not bad if you dodge the broader comparisons. It's like how some manag/anime do alternate universe stories with the same characters (you could use Marvel or DC for examples too). This isn't better than the original, but it's bad...just different. I'm enjoying getting to see Jet, Faye, and Spike again; reimagined but still my old Bebop crew.
I wish there was more Ein though.
