The way starfleet has been portrayed since the 60s has been like the US coast guard on steroids. They defend the boarders, they do disaster relief and humanitarian aid, they function in law enforcement capacity etc and in the past the great navel powers did quite a bit of exploration. The Santa Maria that Columbus rode on was armed. Quite a few British warships circumnavigated the globe, and the military has always done wonders for science. The internet was a military application as is everything from the microwave oven to the navigation on my phone.

Just cause starfleet is the military doesn't mean they can't explore and conduct research during peacetime.

You got it twisted, breh. Starfleet does serve a military purpose, for sure, but it's not primarily a military thing that just happens to do exploration during peacetime. That's the big difference between this and the maritime history (which is also a colonial/imperial history, another thing that Trek rejects) you're bringing up. The end of this latest movie confirms that, actually, during Kirk's speech, in which he specifically says that they're primarily explorers, and earlier in the movie, too, with the line "we're explorers, not soldiers." The whole movie is about rejecting the primacy of the military model. That's why the villain is a paranoid military dude.

I never say that video, but it`s well known that Roddenberry lost his mind as he got older and was forced to take a step back from Trek because he was ruining the franchise, but lets ignore my opinions on his mental facilities. Going by the logic of that quote, if my girl comes catches me in bed, naked with her best friend, and I say I`m not cheating, I guess she has no reason to be mad because I said I`m not cheating even though all the evidence shows otherwise.

Captain James T. Kirk: I'm a soldier, not a diplomat. I can only tell you the truth.

That quote was from the first season episode Errand of Mercy on Star Trek the original series.

Think what want Roddenberry says it is not a military organization. And when he said it he was in full control of his mind.

Highly enjoyable movie. Took my girl and she enjoyed it and was steady talking about it on the way home.

I feel bad for the people who let their own feelings on where the franchise should be going blind them from seeing a good movie.

Saw it tonight. Thought it was a very dope movie

Harrison was a g, action was good and there was plenty of it.

Im not a trekkie by any means but i have thought both of the current films have been piff. What are the true fans of the franchise saying?

i really enjoyed it, BUT it should have been called Into the Ship..because thats where all but 3 quick scenes took place in.

I got amped when i thought we were gonna see kronos, yet all we see is some steps :beli:

show us some damn planets and worlds and shyt abrams

that movie poster was false advertising

yeah this is kinda how i feel. like i enjoyed it, the cast is on point but for the most part of the movie they just sat there in stalemate with the two ships. or at least thats how it felt. like it was all good for the first 25 minutes or so, then it just sort of sat there.

it felt almost like a long episode rather than a movie. and the way they really underutilized khan made it feel more like a set-up for a future movie rather than a movie in its own right.

Just watched this with my girl, we were both:whoo: That shyt was visually amazing. The plot with the whole Kirk dying and using the Kahn blood then suddenly waking up felt a little rushed and lazy, but other then that this shyt is amazing.

EDIT: spoilers in white
