Well said. As an over-the-top, fast-paced action movie with tons of explosions and fancy effects, it succeeded, but as a Star Trek movie, it was an absolute failure. Martin Luther King was a big fan of the original Star Trek tv series and would watch it every week with his whole fam, specifically because it promoted utopian values and diversity in a time of racial strife and the cold war, and managed to do so within a framework that allowed for action, adventure, philosophical elements, and character development/relationships... the Star Trek he loved is gone and has been replaced by a generic, hollow, cash grab that reflects none of those values and doesn't even attempt either literal or metaphorical exploration.
:russ: i'll never analyze anything made by hollywood on that level.. so it was good. its just star trek, its not like its star wars or some shyt... :troll:

Star Wars is pure, dumb, entertainment with no depth whatsoever, and I say that as someone who loved Star Wars as a kid. Star Trek was always the deeper of the two, and explicitly so. And let's not act like "that level" is something that most people aren't interested in- one of the reasons people loved Nolan's Batman and it changed the game for superhero films is that it was explicitly deeper and more thoughtful than the average superhero film and engaged all these themes- and managed to do them in a way that was entertaining, just like old Star Trek. They should leave mindless action to the Expendables and similar movies instead of dumbing down franchises that have traditions of being interesting.

FTFY it's not just an american thing. foreign movies use all the same generic tropes found in american cinema as well.

I know 90% of American cinema sucks. That's why it's unfortunate to see yet another interesting series fall prey to it.

The thing is, we live in a golden age for TV- shows like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, etc, have much more substance than most movies out now, and great production values and entertainment, too. They're also very popular- GoT showed that a fantasy show can have major mainstream success beyond a cult fanbase, so sci-fi clearly can, too. It's actually a great time for Trek to be brought back as a TV show, which would also free it up from having to go the all action all the time route, but because of the movies, that probably won't happen.

I had ZERO desire to watch the first, and caught this because it came on EPIX which we are getting a free preview of today...

shyt was FLAMES!!!!

And I'm a very casual star trek fan, as I I've heard of KHAN only because of the "classic" line uttered by William Shatner. but I've never even seen any of the star trek films...

I might have to go and check out the first one now.

Yeah it's not perfect but it's epic as fukk. And the visuals the best I've seen since......Guardians Of The Galaxy.

It really is amazing what they can do to film now days.

Soundtrack is dope as well.
