He was never the best PG in basketball. Saying he took the Nets to the Finals in the weak East doesn't tell us about his INDIVIDUAL run.

Just tell me a single playoff run where Jason Kidd dominated. That's all. Every single All Time Point Guard has at least 1 year of playoff performances or a series where they light everything in front of them on fire. This thread is 3 days old and no one has even put up a box scores, mentioned a memorable series, or even a simple "remember when Jason Kidd..." statement.

All we got is nikkas creating hypotheticals and posting Youtube passing highlights.

Point proven. OP is right.
Then who was the best pg in basketball then? Nash, GP, Tony Parker, Billups, Steve Francis?

Look thru the thread brehs have posted stats and videos.

Nah that's Karl Malone. Was considered by plenty of people the best power forward. I wouldn't even rank him over Barkley, yet alone guys like Dirk or KG who actually won a championship.

Malone was a definition of a regular season superstar.

Kidd wasn't that popular to be the most overrated guy. Even Vince was more overrated. All those flashy dunks, layups and all that, but couldn't get shyt done in playoffs in that same weak ass era in the eastern conference. Yet dude was finishing 1st in all star game votes.
Vince is more overrated than both Kidd and Malone. I don't think Malone is underrated, really. Kidd is, though...

Kidd was making All-Star teams from '96 thru '08, a 13-year stretch. In the middle of that, basically the early Net years, he was argued as possibly the best point in ball in real time...

But he wasn't, the first half of those 13 years I would say Payton and Stockton were still strong enough to be ahead of Kidd, and the second half of those 13 years saw the ascension of Nash certainly, and possibly Billups...

At any given time there was always a better point than Kidd. His limitations and shortcomings have already been hashed out upthread, so I won't repeat here bit he was never the best point alive. And there are numerous posts in this thread that affirm my opinion that dude is overrated...

Nash and Billups weren't better. Neither one of them was a better defender or rebounder than J. Kidd. Offensively they were better but they didn't dominate games like Kidd did without scoring.

Nash won 2 mvp awards and billups led Detroit to the championship as their best player. Kidd on the other hand only got out of the second round twice in his career until he was a role player and those 2 years happened to be the 2 worst years in the history of the eastern conference, back when half the conference couldn’t crack 90 points per game, 1-2 teams were scoring 100 per game, & 50-32 could get you the top seed in the east. This fixation this board has with propping up a point guard who couldn’t post up, couldn’t cut off ball, couldn’t spot up, couldn’t come off screens, couldn’t finish at the rim, and couldn’t shoot from any spot on the floor or distance for the majority of his career will never make sense to me.

30% from distance in the 2002 finals :beli:. 36.4% from the field & 27% from deep in the 2003 finals :beli:. 25 seconds into the first video we get a graphic that says he’s 11/70 (15.7%) from deep during the playoffs :trash:
Okay that's cool. But he was doing the things you said he couldn't do.

Since we're talking about careers overall and percentages...during his Nets career he shot 36% from 10-16 feet, 40% on long 2s, 34% from 3.

In postseason, 39%, 41%, and 30% respectively.

Are these efficient numbers? No.

But I challenge you to go find the same percentages for guards of that era, whether we know they are better than him, or are supposedly better than him since he's so overrated. Especially the latter, guys who don't get placed over him who supposedly should. Because outside of someone refusing to drop Kidd out of the Top 3/4 PGs to do it, nobody's overrating Kidd.

Let's see which guys with reputations as deadly shooters actually deliver.

That’s just it though. Outside of Kidd, the only other guards from either position in the east who were great in those 2 years were AI & Vince Carter (pretty sure mcgrady was a small forward back then & Reggie Miller wasn’t really a star anymore). Even out west outside of Kobe, Allen, a declining Payton, & Nash it was slim pickings for guards. Props to him for becoming a good shooter, but he was a terrible shooter during his prime and that’s a big part of why they couldn’t win it all. I’ve got Kidd somewhere in the top 10 point guards ever but his serious limitations as a scorer limited what the nets could run on offense. Their 2004 loss to Detroit is another great example of this.

I don't care about what great guards were in the East. That's irrelevant to the supposed weaknesses Kidd had, which were in the same ballpark as others with different reputations. If you're punishing Kidd for a perceived lack of guard play in the early 00s then everyone listed gets the same punishment.

I just listed his percentages for the Nets. That is his prime. During this era everyone you listed has the same percentages or marginally better outside of probably Ray. And Mac was a SG in Orlando so he applies also.

Detroit beat the Nets because they were a better team. They had no center, and Vince wasn't there yet. Kidd shooting the way you think he should doesn't beat the Pistons.

Used to say the same until I realized he has a ring, top 10 3’s :dahell: , and is always mixy in the PG convo.

His game was ugly to me to keep a bean and was never a real fan but Kidd balled out during his career

They very much could have taken that series. Kidd was 2-8 from the field in the second half of game 5 and 4-14 overall in a game they lost by 7. Missed a pair of free throws in the 4th quarter with 11 seconds left with the nets up 2 which gave Detroit the chance to send the game to overtime. He missed a 15 footer with 36 seconds left in regulation with the nets up 1. If he executes that’s 15 fewer minutes they have to play instead of triple overtime. Then maybe he’s got something left in the tank for games 6 & 7. They lost game 6 at home with a chance to close it out but he had 2 points, 2 assists, 2 fouls, & 2 turnovers in the 4th quarter. Went 1-5 with no assists or steals in the 2nd quarter where the nets got outscored 27-11.
