Above the fray.
Reduce police funding. I live in a city where schools have to close because its too hot for them to operate while the police roll around in a 500 mil budget doing nothing. I know irs its impoweing to "do it on your own" but this shyt hasn't worked on a large scale ever.
Has the crime rate in your city changed over the last 3 years? And if so, in which direction?

Police budgets are mismanaged for sure, but if your answers to the above questions are what I think, good luck trying to convince the public that funding to law enforcement should be reduced.

actually its gotten worse with 300+ mil

Data: Policing remains Columbus' largest expense in 2021 budget.

Our public health doesn't even have a fraction of that budget either. The all the police budget did was make it easier from them to kill black people out here. And no actually the crime has gotten worse because there's no real jobs out here and no outlook for non professionals. Actually its like this all over the midwest.

Ok, so crime rate is up.
Like I said, good luck trying to convince residents of your city that reducing the police budget is the right idea.

ok, so what about the communities that have been demanding more for years yet watch schools get worse and worse? at what point do you do something different or do you simply settle for the insanity of doing the same thing and expecting a different result?
they havent been demanding hard enough

Oh people are convinced its the gerrymandering that keeps laws like this. If we had this type of attitude slavery would still be around because its "no use" Not a shot im just saying when we talk about real change that can and should happen we give up and look for reasons it won't happen.

BTW i grew up on the same block as Marcus Garvey schools in LA and I see what the positive impact schools like this have. The only issue is charter schools are set up to be for profit and our schools should have equal funding no matter where your zip code is.

I take no offense and don't see it as a shot. More of a deflection.

Topic was about alternative sources of public funding for schools. Somebody mentioned moving some of law enforcement budget. I pointed out what the roadblock to that notion being considered is.

Now we can go back to the topic of schools.

A roadblock that could be changed but y'all shook and fine with the status quo at the end of day :yeshrug:

These answers are empty. What is shook? Cities rioted and burned down with the goal of reforming police budgets and 99.9% of cities kept them in tact. So if burning down businesses doesn’t even work, what’s the realistic way to make this shift happen?

vote? Ok cool, except constituents aren’t a monolith and there is no guarantee my pro-public school candidate will win, so what next? How do you move the people who are in office or who win who don’t have the same views as you?

Cities were burned down by racist cacs mostly. The goal was there but our elected dems decided to cave in and fund police unions anyway which doesn't make the situation unrealistic it just requires people to stop electing the same establishment people to keep the status quo. If all we can hope for is "realistic" change we going to keep talking about this subject 20 yrs later. To me charter schools are unrealistic and just a band aid.

How much does it cost to build a school?
If it's a totally independent private school, over a million dollars.

You need funding for teachers, obviously you need to building as well.

Then you need to pass safety and inspection codes for the building.

There's a ton of other things you have to pay for That's not paid for by the state or federal government if you're totally independent.

I don’t think that’s a valid critique of politics/politicians at the local level - the people who affect funding. A lot more variance in local officials that doesn’t fit under the umbrella of “establishment”

but charter schools are realistic - they are actually opening/exists while public schools continue their 4 decade decline. They may be a band aid, and many will or have failed, but they’re an attempt to provide an alternative for something that has been broken and looks to remain broken

They have done everything but to fund the poor performing schools which is my point. For profit schools imo isn't the solution but I respect your opinion but we gotta get rid of funding schools with property taxes or else nothing fundamentally changes.
