There isn't anyone in your family or immediate circle that works in IT already? Most people I know got their first start by someone hand delivering their resume to a hiring manager.

I would reach out to a recruiting firm over any kind of career coach. Because the recruiting firm only gets paid if they find you employment.

When I got my first break I had to relocate to a smaller city because of too much competition for jobs. Then once I got some experience I was able relocate back to a major market. You may have to deal with a longer commute in order to get noticed.

Networking goes a long way in this field for those without tons of experience. So make sure you're on a first name basis with a minimum of 5 or 6 people already working in the cybersecurity field. And I don't just mean interacting with them online.
unfortunately no. most of my family are nurses or general laborers. May I ask for some examples of recruiting firms that I could possibly reach out to?

my motivation is waning. yes, i'm still studying, but i've been applying to positions and trying to connect with key players on linkedin as well. No call backs, all of them are leaving me on read. I've had my resume serviced several times, spent hundreds of dollars and nothing. Do my credentials really suck that I'm not getting even one response back? I've been on a career change journey for 3 years and I feel i'm going no where.

There are literally so many recruiting firms out there a new one pops up every single month. But I wouldn't give these recruiters my main number either. But rather create a google voice number and forwarded it to your phone so you can better screen calls. Some of these recruiting firms especially the Indian ones will call you night and day for any crappy job that comes across their desk.

How may certifications have you taken? And have you built a home lab for studying?

I tend to stay away from third-party firms because their usually scumbags. But I've gotten 2 or 3 decent jobs going through recruiters in the past. But the ones who tend to hit me up these days are trying to place people into the worse jobs imaginable so be careful.

No certs yet. I’ve been studying for Sec+ off and on...I’m very green in the industry, I’ve only ever done public sector admin work.

Toronto, Canada. I’ve been using LinkedIn a lot more, but I guess my profile still looks quite bare after having it done a couple times

Taking the AWS-Dev cert next week Saturday. Failed all the bonso tests: 50, 66, 67, 70:huhldup: on first attempt.
<RANT>
I keep missing the same shyt too:
  • ECS placement strategies (binpack, spread, random). Honestly after missing them in every test, I think I know the deal now.:ehh:
  • SQS. Always forgetting de-duplication ids and FIFO queues go together:francis:
  • Calculating RCUs for Dynamo DB. Them question be wordy as fukk, i miss one word(eventual consistency, or transactions) and just fukk it up:mjcry:.
  • Xray. All sorts of trickery and sorcery. :why:
  • Cloudfront. I should know by now that invalidating cache requires cache-control: max-age-0. :hhh:
  • Encryption. Knowing when to use plaintext data keys, encrypted data keys, or encrypted keys just eludes me:mindblown:.
  • Lambda: I always miss one question on custom runtimes:leostare:
Not that ive been feeling extra prepared, but sometimes i just feel got by the test. Its not like solution architect test where dude was bringing random services out of the woodwork. Its more like missing details here and there of services I know:aicmon:.

</RANT>

The positives are I'm improving in the knowledge areas i was initially bad at, and I feel like I am getting a handle of API Gateway:yeshrug:

I'm in Montreal and I scoped Toronto a few years ago when I was coming up. For somebody with less than 10 years in IT, it's extremely hard. It might be the most challenging market in the country.

I'm not well versed in the Ontario market but I know that a few cities are becoming interesting on the IT side (Kanata, Mississauga, Markham, Gatineau...)

Not too familiar with Canada but I would imagine Toronto would have to be a hotbed city there when it comes to careers.

I mess with linkedn in too but like 60% of recruiters hit me off my dice profile and like 30% off indeed. Linkedin is more random if anything for me.

:beli: might have to relocate. Canada is terrible for IT as they bring in so much cheap labor from india and Asia. Wages an job opportunities are much lower there than it is in the US.

Yeah, the Canadian market looks terrible with all these body shops bringing in tons of cheap foreign labor. Here in the states the Trump administration has increased H1b fees along with a record number of denials. Which is probably the reason for the increase in IT jobs and salaries the last few years. Any country with unchecked immigration generally has suppressed wages and low growth rates.

Trust me I know. Issue with the Ottawa-Gatineau market is being bilingual, which I'm not. I went to Carleton but luck wasn't on my side post-grad. Had to move home (Toronto). I'd gladly come back should the opportunity allow. Really I'm trying to leave Toronto...Canada...all together. DMV would be my dream area.

I found only the scam companies contact me on Dice...not alot of offerings of entry level roles in Toronto I've found. I could give it another shot though.

I've been wanting to relocate to the DMV or Charlotte for almost 3 years now. The job market and standard of living here in toronto are impossible. Like I mentioned above I would love to relocate to the DMV, but i'm getting shut down alot with the need for sponsorship (H1B)

My company uses an agile methodology for SDLC.So I use JIRA daily and am familiar with agile concepts. I’m not on the dev team, so I’m not part of their daily scrums.

Is having a scrum cert worth it from stacking certs perspective?:leostare::patrice:
