That's how the world works breh. :yeshrug:

I did way more work when I was working for $10-15/hr taking tech support calls than I do as a Sys Engineer (where I mostly just chill unless something goes down).
What's the difference from when you were an Admin to now an Engineer? It seems like IT Engineer is used interchangeably with IT Admin.

What I do to stay focused is:

Find the ideal job I want. Use Paysa to look up the pay. Factor how much I would make a check. Now, when I get paid at my current job. I feel like I'm losing money. That's all the motivation I need.

Problem solved :myman:
:ohhh:

Brehs..out of these career fields in the IT, section, which ones do y’all think are best? (Earning potential, job stability, growth, advancement opportunities, etc)

Bachelor of Science: Information Technology | Georgia Gwinnett College

Digital Media
Enterprise Systems
Software Development
Systems and Security
I'd say SDev or Systems/Security. Even though the market is getting to be saturated, developers are always going to be in need. There's always postings open because of some supposed lack of qualified people and the abundance of job hopping. Security is important because 9 times out of 10 it's poorly implemented or not implemented at all. Data is valuable and companies will be willing to pay a premium for people that can keep it safe. Not sure what you could do with digital media, enterprise systems should be wrapped up with SDev and security.

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill., Dec. 20, 2017/PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- CompTIA, the leading provider of vendor-neutral skills certifications for information technology (IT) professionals around the world, today launched a major expansion of its credentialing program with the introduction of CompTIA Stackable Certifications.

More than 145,000 IT professionals who have attained more than one CompTIA certification were notified today that they've earned a CompTIA Stackable Certification, recognizing their deep expertise and strong commitment to continuous professional development and growth.

"The technology professionals who've earned CompTIA Stackable Certifications have done so by passing rigorous exams developed by the industry to validate the technical and business skills that are in the highest demand in today's economy," said Todd Thibodeaux, president and CEO, CompTIA.

CompTIA Stackable Certifications are aligned across two pathways that serve as the foundation for any IT career: infrastructure and cybersecurity.

"More so than any other certifying body, CompTIA makes extensive use of performance-based questions and simulations in its exams," said James Stanger, CompTIA's chief technology evangelist. "These simulations accurately reflect the real-world scenarios IT pros face daily, requiring test-takers to demonstrate skills in networking, cybersecurity and other areas under the pressure of a timed test."

CompTIA certified IT professionals are eligible for a variety of stackable certifications. For example:

  • CompTIA A+ and CompTIA Network+ = CompTIA IT Operations Specialist
  • CompTIA A+ and CompTIA Linux+ = CompTIA Systems Support Specialist
  • CompTIA Network+ and CompTIA Server+ = CompTIA Network Infrastructure Professional
  • CompTIA Network+ and CompTIA Cloud+ = CompTIA Cloud Administration Professional
  • CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+ and CompTIA Security+ = CompTIA Secure Infrastructure Associate
  • CompTIA Security + and CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst = CompTIA Security Analytics Specialist
  • CompTIA Security+, CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst and CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner = CompTIA Security Analytics Expert

CompTIA Stackable Certifications require active CE certifications. Holders of "good-for-life" certifications may earn stackable certifications by re-certifying and validating that their skills are up to date. The complete list of CompTIA Stackable Certifications and eligibility requirements are available at http://certification.comptia.org/certifications/which-certification/stackable-certifications. Certification holders can log into their CompTIA certification account to review the status of their credentials.

CompTIA is the global leader in vendor-neutral technical certifications for IT professionals in skills ranging from IT support and networking, to cybersecurity and cloud computing. CompTIA has awarded more than two million certifications to technology professionals around the world. Operating in more than 100 countries, CompTIA works closely with its 3,000 academic, training and content partners to ensure students and professionals have the tools they need to enter and excel in the tech workforce.

The best path is experience. Get a job on campus doing desktop support or something. Your campus probably has a security team that you can shadow if you get your foot in the door. From there, work on certs. You can get an IT focused bachelors, but it's all going to be theory with no application.

You guys don't seem interested, but the military is a excellent route for someone who wants to get PAID to get experience in cyber security. You can join the Guard or Reserve (get a bonus) and be guaranteed experience. With a security clearance, you can get paid more than a person doing the same job but doesn't have the clearance. If you want to travel, you can go active duty and get paid to be overseas gaining experience.

What is everyones career goals for 2018?

Im being very picky where i want my next company to be. Im in a good space now where I know imma get a pretty big bag just from the few interviews & offers I have had & turned down in the past couple months.

At my current company shyt has become a breeze so I can basically do my job on autopilot but its not challenging me at all. That's how I know it's time to move on.

Idk if I want to start this CCIE grind or look into really focusing on cloud technologies (AWS mainly).

What is everyones career goals for 2018?.

1) Two certs. I'm thinking something from the SANS DFIR catalogue and OSCP.

2) Take my coding and engineering/research skills to the next level. Produce at least 3 security tools/projects.

3) Retain and add on to all my clients and take point on more IR.

Want to get into IT, but have no idea where to start, tried helpdesk, but they want helpdesk experience. So I'm lost.

I may be moving next year to a better job market. I'm mostly doing help desk work and I'm already bored with it.

Want to get into IT, but have no idea where to start, tried helpdesk, but they want helpdesk experience. So I'm lost.

I would get the A+ cert first. I couldn't even get an interview without it.

my goals are AWS Architect Associate Q1 and Azure Architect possibly Q3, not sure yet.

Pretty much in the same boat as you at work. After getting those 2 certs, I'll be carefully choosing my next challenge. And they better bring the brinks truck :troll:

One of my buddies is a Cisco guy out there in Europe and he keeps telling me CCIE is that thing :dame:. So go for it if you ready :shaq:

We getting this money, brehs :salute:
