I’m not questioning his talent, I’m saying the hype they gave him don’t match the energy or attention from the fans

They hyped him more than lebron
LeBron’s first year was a blockbuster movie
Wemby is on The WB after Nick Freno status
:shaq2:
Bron wouldn’t have that same hype in this era

Social media gets a hot topic for a few weeks & moves on

I don't know or care about national hype but it's clear from the times I've seen him (and the Spurs have been heavily featured so far) that he will be a star in the league. He doesn't even have a proper point guard to help make the game easier for him and get easy baskets. Once Pop gets that for him and he continues to develop he will be fine. And not trying to compare him with Chet but he probably would look just as good playing with an All NBA guard in Shai and an all around player like Giddy. Both who are better passers then anyone on the Spurs.
Yeah I'd almost argue that victor on this thunder core is making a DEEP run yearly in the playoffs. I'm talking that kind of team that even if you beat them in the 2nd round it took everything you had

I see what you're saying but idk if I agree with that one breh. I think it has to do with him being foreign. Bron's high school games were on ESPN, a casual ball fan may have heard about Wemby but they probably didn't know what team he played on, when those games even came on, etc. before he got to the league. He's still a spectacle but I believe Bron's hype would be even more crazy with the help of social media. You could look at Zion as a similar comparison as far as strictly hype.

Zion wasn't at lebron's hype level either IMO. I feel like Zion and Wiggins had the same amount of hype coming out.

With wemby they did have those mets 92 games he was playing at the forefront but with social media there's no longer a captive audience. Back then as a hoops fan if they wanted you to see lebron, you're seeing lebron. You couldn't just go to the internet and watch streams, youtube some other shyt or look at big booty bytches on IG at a whim

No, but you knew who Zion was since high school because all his dunks and highlight plays were all over social media. I'm just saying Zion's hype with social media would be like a LeBron's hype today with social media. As for your second paragraph you might be right, but I still feel like American casual bball fans didn;t go out of there way to catch a Wemby game pre-NBA, and that may be due to his highlights being on social media in a minute to where you don't have to, but that's a whole other convo.

true

but that doesn't cover the element of entertainment

he can go in to be all time dominant but play.style is really the bigger factor in becoming iconic..........

Possibly but we’ve seen dominant icons are Wilt and Shaq not transcendent Icons ?

The Zion comparison proves my point. With only a limited source controlling the sports narrative it was easier to maintain the hype.

Zion in early 2000’s is getting hyped x100 same as Wemby

not for their styles of play

they put up numbers & were dominant

nothing in their play style was mimicked though

most bigs are effective because they are big

not because they are nice with it

Ultimately, Wemby is a skillful finesse player

Whereas LeBron and Zion were skillful highlight reel power dunkers. So it's a different type of excitement.

Wemby putting up 19/10/3 as a young giraffe learning to walk is incredible, but he'd probably have to be averaging 30 as a rookie or have the Spurs at 10-3 (instead of 3-10) in order to sustain whatever peak hype he may have had.

To me, all that really matters is him making it through the season healthy.

Feels like nobody cares anymore.. it’s like seeing a gorilla at the zoo juggling 3 tennis balls.. the first few times we seen it, we were fascinated.. but now, we don’t care… nobody talks about Wemby anymore…..

:lupe:
This is why Wilt is really the GOAT. He made those statlines so normal for him that people take it for granted now and believe it was just a matter of weak competition.

Like people said, Wemby almost had a triple double with blocks the other night and no one was even really paying attention. People got used to Wilt's insane statlines too so over time people kinda downplayed just how extraordinary it really was.

Not really he just plays for no frills azz San Antonio. I predict a giant leap next year though. Even though he's kinda killing it right now as a rookie.
