How effed up is it that almost the most important decision in life is made at age 17?

At the end of the day you will need college in the world we are living in. Go to a community college and see how many 25+ are their and many will tell you i wish i would have did this when i was younger and able to have the fun part of college

college is only neccessary depending on your chosen occupation. you don't need a degree to move up in emergency management (my chosen field once i retire from active duty), or to be a plumber, etc. there are many routes to success, but every high school grad is pressured into college whether they're ready or not and whether they even want to or not. that's how you end up with people choosing nonlucrative majors and 60% of recent college grads NOT working in their area of study.

Like other people have already stated..College is a scam.

I graduated from VCU with a bachelor in Accounting. When I went out to find a job, EVERYBODY said "You need experience." And I'm sitting there like "But mfer, I went to school for 4 years to learn this shyt!..I know what I'm doing!" I'm now a firefighter (best job I ever had), not even using my degree.

If I could go back and do it all again. I'd go active duty Air Force or Coast Guard for 4 years..Get a job in something I could use in the civilian world, see and explore the world, come home after 4-6years, use the Military G.I. Bill if I want to go to school (free) and start from there.

My parents basically forced me to go to college..it wasn't any other options. But my kids will know the real deal and will be well informed on the many avenues that can be traveled.

How much does being a firefighter pays? One of my friends is doing some internship in Fairfax VA

Down here, starting out FF pay is 40k-42k. Up in Fairfax, I believe they make more because of cost of living..They are around the 48k-55k range starting out.

It's decent money, not caking BUT the fact that you get to go to work, chill, watch tv, workout, help people, actually make a difference and have tons of time off (work 10 days a month)..its the best job ever. Tell your friend to do it.

Nah college is a good place to elevate yourself, expose yourself to different ideologies, and ways of thinking, also helps you develop as a man. Ive changed alot going to university, and I know damm well if I stayed back in my lil rot not of a hood, I wouldnt have elevated as a man. When I say college, I dont even mean private universitys or YALE n Princeton.

State schools and Community Colleges serve their purpose imo.
You don't seem to understand what I am saying. College is great, I loved college. The problem is the expenses you pay to get degrees that continue to diminish in value. Its simple, the more people have their 4 year degrees the more the playing field gets leveled. The 4 year diploma is starting to become what a high school diploma was for generations past. The biggest difference? Those in the past did not have to start their careers in the red...do you realize how demoralizing that is? You work your ass off until 22-24 years old...then you get out into the work force in which companies do NOT want to spend money on people with "no experience" so you are stuck with entry level positions which pay as low as they possibly can...your student loans will start getting at you in 6 months to pay up and on top of that the cost of living continues to go up as well.

Now granted we are better educated, but is the cost worth it anymore? That is the real debate here...nobody is saying college is not teaching us anything or that it is not a great experience. It is, but the bachelors degree is not giving us what many believe it is supposed to do...a near bulletproof financial security blanket.

I agree with you on the community colleges part as thats how i did my first 2 years. State schools tho? Have you seen the prices per credit lately? Most reputable state colleges are charging you $300-$500 a credit breh.

Honestly your responses sound like you are just trying to justify your decision to go to college and I understand that. You need to look at the bigger picture though...the student loan debt is MASSIVE and continues to grow at an alarming rate because more people are defaulting as a result of not being able to pay.

THis is whats fukked up and what I was getting at in my first post. I think 60 mins even did a segment on corporations not wanting to train people

shyt is trife man. What is worse is that the same people imposing these standards are the ones who didnt have to deal with them when they were entering the game. fukkery on all levels and I'm pretty situated so it isnt like I'm even complaining.

16 month internship in FInancial Services to provide experience
Gonna graduate with a BCom degree at an AASCB accredited institution
Debt free if I decide not to transfer

:manny: Could be worse

But how you tryna tell people that they need a bachelor's, extracurriculars (if outta school), 2 years experience and one or two designations just to get an interview. And nevermind that, because all it takes is a bytch sucking a managing directors dikk, extortion, or nepotism to take a job that you are qualified for away from you :whew:

I just had a conversation about this earlier today. For the majority i do believe that college is a scam. And this is coming from someone who is currently in school. I definitively believe that college shouldnt be pushed on high school students as much as it is. I think the overall goal is to get as many people in debt as possible, and as someone who has really been trying to focus on being finacially responsible, im starting to see college for what it is. With all that being said, if your in school you should make the most of it and try and keep the debt down by the time you come out

Bro

Everything you just mentioned here is capitalism, at it's finest. Regulating the playing field so that it's fair is would be a prime example of "socialism".

Not saying I agree, but I understand :manny:

I agree that there is a lack of preperation on "life" after high-school. I come from a very small family so there was no support system for me, there was no one I could turn to for advice that was knowledgable who would not judge me. If I did get advice on life it came from someone who barely knew me.

A few years ago I was just one semester away from getting my degree in Finance from a University. I lost motivation because I realized I was not going to enjoy a life in Finance, and stopped attending classes. I want to return back to school in something I will enjoy, which I'm sad to say will probably have nothing to do in business.

Despite losing my motivation for school, I have not lost my passion for learning. I want to return back to school but the path seems so backwards from what I have accomplished already and I also work full-time making 50k/yr. Returning back to school could possible mean going to a community college and starting over...i just dont see any other way. I'm starting to think my window has closed.

Maybe, I'll become a cop :heh:
