Na it's true, I was laughing at "king of biter" lol None of JD artists are regular ideas from him

JD stole the whole Xscape idea from Devante, Devante had a girl group coming called "Sista" (Missy was apart of that group) he was gonna make them the female Jodeci, from style to sound. They rocked bandanas & ponytails

lol....I'm seeing narratives in this thread I've NEVER heard before in life.

I've never heard anyone refer to JD as a biter. This dude came out with KRiss Kross, Da Brat, Bow Wow, etc. As a producer, he never did anything amazing to my ears, but his sound was never bitten from anyone else.

I coudl be wrong if someone can provide some examples.

:mjlol: nikkas in here just making up shyt to try and sound deep or that they know what they talking about

now all of a sudden Usher was marketed differently from his older counterparts? how? where?

i remember usher's music came on right along the grown folks music, right between SILK, Jodeci, LSG, Brian Mcknight, Eric Benet - he was 19 when MY WAY dropped I believe

if you were an R&B artist, your ass had to compete w/the grown folks music too - Tevin Campbell came out on the Graffiti Bridge soundtrack and that shyt had a warning sticker on it, he was like 14 years old

Nah breh. I respect ur R&B knowledge, but I disagree.

Yes. White ppl love Pony, but outside of that they don't care about Ginuwine. Period. "Differences" is chart-wise his biggest single and that wasn't really a crossover smash like Pony. To a lesser degree Pony is like Ignition (remix) to white ppl. It's the 1 Ginuwine song they have in their entire collection. But I bet they have U Make Me Wanna or Nice & Slow, My Way, etc

But let's back this all the way up to 1993. Usher first single "Cal Me a MAck" He's wearing fedoras in the video, he's doing some light dancing, so Ginuwine didn't start that.

Secondly, they didn't know what to do with Usher. He was a kid but they put him with DeVante Swing and Puffy for his first two singles. They were trying to make him a kid singer who was appealing to adults. And it wasn't successful, so they turned him more pop/r&b

I just think it's laughable to say that Ginuwine influenced Usher. I will say Ginuwine brought back the solo entertainer Male R&B star role b/c after Bobby Brown, things kinda shifted to the R&B group. R. KElly said he only came out with Public Announcement because you had to be in a group back then to get on. Ginuwine brought showmanship back, but Usher didn't see Ginuwine and then decide to take dance lessons.

Said the two things i was coming in here to say so...:salute:

nikkas in here arguing shyt that is subjective(who sings better) when this thing really just boils don't to numbers. I've said this forever and i'll say it again...when it comes to anything black in America, black ppl make things popular but white ppl make things successful. Save your hate mail if you disagree, it's all about numbers. When white ppl jump on something popular in black culture the success and popularity goes thru the roof.

Also Usher has always had a POP slant to all his songs at least since the My Way album which catapulted his career. I also would agree with song selection(Usher had a more mackish vibe while Ginuwine came more raw and raunchy initially) and image being a factor (Usher looking and sounding younger and smoother in his vocals than Ginuwine). In my opinion there's literally nothing Ginuwine does better than Usher other than dance, it's just to bad singles don't sell off dancing alone. Ginuwine came with his biggest hit out the gate and didn't have anything even close to it after that, while Usher was cranking out hit after hit...pop type hits at that, ie that crossover game was. :wow::banderas:

End of the day Ginuwine stayed more of an urban star, which is why i suspect nikkas ride with him more and Usher sound had more crossover appeal that would eventually turn him into an international superstar.

Nobody is talkin bout where and when his songs got played. Usher resonated with younger people during that My Way era more than the older people. I can throw on a Ginuwine song at a party for people like 40 and they will fukk wit it faster than alotta Usher songs. Me being a DJ have seen it over and over again. Usher looked more youthful and carried himself more youthful as well. Usher's truly grown image came with 8701.

Ginuwine's biggest hit was Differences. which came out WAY after PONY. So to say he didn't come anything close to it after that is retarded being that he sold more records AFTER that album came out.

:patrice: we're having two different conversations fam...

i was in high school right when ginuwine's first album and ushers MY WAY (his second album) dropped. I can tell you now that chicks loved them both equally, and I went to an all black ghetto ass high school

there's no way teenage black girls could be head over heels for a 19 year old and a 25 year old unless the industry put them both out there the same way at the same time...

like he said, a lot of cats in this thread are remembering wrong because i've never known black artists to be separated by age groups in terms of marketing prior to this new bubble gum pop era we're in now...everything seems to be targeted toward children :yeshrug:

Both Ginuwine and Usher had high school girls on smash. But difference wit Ginuwine is he appealed to the older women more as well. nikka came out on some stripper shyt. His style was way more raunchy than Usher's. I didn't say Usher had no older fans and I never said Ginuwine ain't have the younger fans. I said Usher was overall more catered to a younger audience while Ginuwine older. Ginuwine was 28 when Usher blew up off of My Way. Usher was 19-20. Usher looked and carried himself in a more youthful manner. I'm not tryna say he made kiddie music or nothin. Dude been making adult themed music since he was 15-16..

again man, I think you're confusing my argument

i'm not disagreeing with you, i'm just saying that there are people arguing that they were MARKETED differently when that's just not true

Ok i stand corrected, I thought Pony sold more and was his only platinum hit.

Anyway all the rest i said still stands. Ginuwine had his lane and if Usher never existed maybe he'd have been a bigger deal. :manny:

My problem is that people are using Usher to measure Ginuwine's success. Which is stupid. Usher was the biggest of everybody at the time. Ginuwine was in a comfortable second place. The game had alotta contenders. It wasn't like it is today. There was alotta successful RnB singers out there. The thread said why didn't Ginuwine become a bigger star. It doesn't make sense cause Ginuwine was a huge star. He wasn't as big as Usher but he was a big star nonetheless.

Usher was working with production heavyweights..

Executive produced by cats like L.A.Reid who had credits on Bobby Brown stuff and understood music..As well as JD

Babyface, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis etc

How much credit do we give that in making comparisons with him and Ginuwine??

I dont think Ginuwine should be knocked down to boost up Usher..

Usher was younger so his musical prime hit at the right time

thats a common issue in debates...

@stomachlines @jadillac

right now both them muthafukkas one in the same as far as their popularity goes

r kelly did kinda cameback a couple of years ago whe he did those "love letter" and "write me back" albums on the artistic side of things and musically he was doin' better than usher and then he went right back to doin' the same ol bullshyt guys like trey songz and every "new" nikka doin' when he did that "black panties" album :francis:

usher been lost for a loooooooooooooooooooooong time. he never really found his way after "confessions" album. he's had a couple of songs that were ok after that album but he's had far more misses than hits (or rather in this case, "decent" songs) post "confessions" album

fukk all that though, i want a new babyface album because him and toni's album from 2014 was the shyt :ohlawd:
