How come Ginuwine didn't become a bigger star?

He just made music
  • He didn't have any public controversy/ narrative (Usher cheating on chilli/ the "confessions" era)
  • He didn't marry a high profile female artist (Solé, compared to Chilli, 1/3 of TLC who went diamond)
  • He didn't have a huge feature run. Not enough features on hit songs. I think features count i mean look at Lil Wayne. Dude's star only got brighter when he was everywhere during that 2004-2011 run. Alotta people disregard/underestimate features. Even future has a big fanbase cause he was the dude on the hook for alotta records that were everywhere...
  • Like others said, he started when he was older. So his target demographic was older. And eventually those young adults gain responsibilities and you fall to the wayside. Unless you hit them in the gut while they're young. Which bleeds into the next point...
  • Not enough catchy songs. Music on par with usher, but what i mean by catchy is if a kid or adolescent can recite your hooks or lines verbatim without even knowing what the song is about until like 10 years later.

All these things put together make the difference imo

:ld:He just cooled down while Ush continued to heat up. :yeshrug: All stars fade some time and G's faded out after 2002. Maybe if he had a relationship with a singer from a female group, he would've lasted longer. But he married Sole. Also few cameos in movies might have helped too (Usher was in She's All That and The Faculty).

During his first 5 albums, Ginuwine was in the movies "Juwanna Mann" & "Honey". He also guest-starred or was a recurring character on the TV shows: "Martial Law", "Moesha", "Platinum", and "Half & Half"

He doesn't have an album as good as Confessions. That has shyt to do with his singing and dancing ability. And like I said. Ginuwine made that shyt that Usher came back out doin fashionable first. HE was the first one out there cloning MJ moves n shyt. Gliding across the room with Fedora's on. shyt like that. I saw the shyt in real time. That shyt was played out before Ginuwine brought it back. And it's been here ever since.

I don't see any of MJ in Ginuwine nor do I care. Ginuwine is not on Usher level and never was. Period. Like comparing Kobe to JR Smith. Stop it

The age thing I'm not rolling with because Nicki and beyonce are in their mid 30's and high schoolers love them

Nicki used Barbie as a marketing tool to cater to a younger fan base and Bey been around since she was a late teen.
:patrice:not really sure why you felt the need to tell me that

just saying that teenagers don't care about age - in school none of those chicks cared about how old that dude was

:francis: As a former Ginuwine stan, I can confirm folks did care about his age during his fifth album, "Back II da Basics" (I was a Junior in High School at the time, 2005-2006). Which was always odd to me because Jamie Foxx dropped his "Unpredictable" album around the same & that album went Double Platinum despite Jamie Foxx being at least 3 years older than Ginuwine.

I don't see Usher biting Ginuwine in any way. Never even heard that comparison before.

It's just that he progressed Into a MJ Bobby Brown mold.

I just don't think Ginuwine was apealling to white ppl enough to be a Usher level star.
I heard that comparison all the time in the early 2000's.

:wtf: JR Smith? Word?.

My nikka made Pony...Same Ol G...Differences...In Those Jeans...His first 2 albums were underrated classics. At least give the homie an all-star player.. Usher/Ginuwine was a legit argument in 90s :rudy: Dont shyt on homie like that.

I tell you what...you drop Pony at a party today and it set shyt off harder than any Usher record.

Ginuwine is T-mac...had a spark when he started then...you know...but before his back and knees gave out, T-mac or Kobe was a legit conversation. So was Usher/Ginuwine

Matter fact, I remember that joke on Steve Harvey show where Steve said something about Regina listening to Usher and she was like :camby:its all about Ginuwine

That counts:ufdup:

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
Ginuwine married sole, the relationship wasn't high profile, compared to usher's (which wasn't marriage)
I will also say that Usher low key sold alotta records off Confessions based on a lie. He was running around sayin those songs were based on a true story then finally admitted they weren't after the album sold mad records n shyt. Lol had people mad gassed thinkin the shyt was about Chili.

No he wasn't. Ginuwine doesn't have any album touching 8701 or Confessions. Ginuwine was carried by Timbalands productions. All these cats like Chris Brown are Usher/R.Kelly clones

:what:"100% Ginuwine" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> "8701"

I listened to Usher's big 3 albums ("My Way", "8701", & "Confessions") during the summer. "8701" is definitely the worst album of the 3, despite probably having the best group of singles.

See people gettin it twisted like I'm tryna shyt on Usher. I'm not. I was defending him like crazy in another thread when people was tryna undermine his talent and put Chris Brown over him. But as far as Ginuwine goes. Yea we gonna have to respectfully disagree. Especially on the dancing shyt. Dude was the only one breakdancing and doin that Michael Jackson shyt. Usher came back out in full overhaul with how he was dancing. With JD the king of biters as his mentor I don't see how he didn't tell Usher to capitalize off of that.

breh, Jamie Foxx dropped that album coming off an Oscar performance in Ray. His star was at an all-time high, age didn't matter. He was hot and was going to sell as long as the music was good.

Jamie's 1st album back in the early 90's didn't sell at all.

But Ginuwine was DONE way before 2005. Avant was bigger than Ginuwine in 2005.
