Like I said, college debt was my main worry and I also had some worries about my math abilities going into a scientific field so I went into something that I had more of a personal knack for with IT
I'm 35 going for my BS in M. E. I have literally never paid for college. Even if I didn't get financial aid, it was offset when I claim taxes and was reimbursed for it. Granted I'm doing EVERYTHING at a CC and I plan to transfer to a poly uni., which also happens to be the cheapest uni in FL per. credit-hour price. YOU CAN DO IT!

These are sobering stats. Depending which admin wins, what would you suggest they do?
wont happen but there needs to be gender segregated schools.

Failing that they need to do everything possible to increase the number of Men in schools from Janitor to Principal.

Very insightful thread. The points I'm going to make have been stated before, whether in public discourse or in this thread, however I'll mention or reiterate them.

1. The reality is that more investment, time and financial, needs to be appropriated to black boys; parents, first and foremost, need to be equally stringent with boys & girls. Once a basis for intellectualism is re-established, the African Americans can commence a community reconstruction.

2. Black parents are going to have to de-emphasize the two favorite black male/boy past times, at least, until they have satisfactory competence in reading, writing, speaking & math skills that are appropriate for their age: video games and sports. There's no reason why any child that makes it to middle school not knowing how to read & write, which is too common in black boys from low income households and boys who struggle in math which prevents them from graduating from high school if they actually know how to read, write and speak. Asian parents, for example, will gift their boys age appropriate calculators before they ever get a PS5 or Nintendo, and they'll understand how to use EVERY function on it. If those grades aren't right and they cannot play that calculator like they play that game, then NO VIDEO GAMES... and this extends from K-12. This is why Asians tend to excel at math more than African Americans. We're grossly over-represented in sports, which is ok, but we need more representation in education and the occupational fields that matter.

3. As stated in this thread, it would be wise for black boys to have a trade, in addition to, having a formal education. Both strengthen each other and black boys will definitely need more options, especially in this economy.

This topic hits home because I'm planning on returning to school (debt free) after quitting my strenuous blue collar job, then returning to the job market in my mid to late 40's (on my terms). I did drop out of high school at 17 years old, but my intelligence has never been indicative that decision I made many moons ago. My journey will be a positive model for the youngbloods to follow.
