And?

Someone has to do it.

The majority of employees are women over the age of 35 years old.

And? Someone is doing it.

Why should they be incentivized to do work that could/ should be done by teenagers, retirees, & special needs adults?

We dont live in Utopia. If you are an adult working one of these jobs, that low paycheck should be motivating you to improve your situation.

We're all under paid. Increase everyone's wages across the board and call it a day.

The contempt for poor people in this thread is disturbing. :smh:

There are about four unemployed people for every job opening - everybody can't just leave and get a better job. It's economically impossible. Even if everybody had a masters degree, there would just be a bunch of people with masters degrees working fast food and retail. Somebody has to be at the bottom and personally I don't see whats so abhorrent about treating them fairly.

How does the saying go? A society should be judged by how it treats its weakest members. :usure:

You guys can theorize and hypothesize all day about the benefits of business giving away all their profits to their workers, but in the real world socialism has never succeeded and likely will never will. What would motivate someone to start a business, usually requiring a large initial capital investment, simply just to give the majority of the bonuses away to their workers? I mean, you guys seem to think business are obligated to pay their workers the maximum salary possible, simply for the "good of the nation" or whatever BS you guys seem to believe at the time. Again, its clear that many of you all have never really started a business or really looked at the inner workings of how a successful business thrives. Simply "paying people more" isn't the answer to solve all ills. Because if the business no longer becomes viable (i.e. hostess) then there will be NO profits to pay ANYONE.

:snoop:

Hostess has a back story. Stop reading the front headlines and running with it.

Not obligated. Just the minimum wage. Why is that a problem? And socialism is government theory. Besides people with real jobs work in offices, I will get one of those minute I finish my degree. I will get paid well. Why is it Microsoft, Deloitte can do so, but McDonalds can't? Is it the type of industry? Or the fact the McD's workers are lower on the scale. If so, then pay them so. But don't underpay. You also neglect the idea if you pay too little no one will work for you.

If one job doesn't pay enough, either update your resumé with some education or get an additional job. Stop being lazy and expecting a handout. People expecting a reward when they don't apply themselves is just plain stupid and counterproductive.

Increasing the minimum wage to keep pace with the price of food and healthcare is "socialism" now? Hong Kong is a socialist economy in this bytch?

...says the man who's avatar is Mansa Musa, a king famous for giving away gold to the poor :beli:

We're at a point where no one will do it...

If a person is working for a multi billion dollar company 40-80 hours a week they should be able to house and feed themselves.

If you are a working adult and you are working "these" jobs there often is no where else for you to turn.

That graph is cool to look at and all but what goes into calculating the index numbers on the Y-axis. I cant seem to understand it, since you seem knowledgeable about the graph, do you care to explain how the index numbers were calculated so that I can make sense of the graph?

We're saying the same thing. I think it's a problem that the owners of these businesses are not paying these workers more and it should come out of their pockets.

When I was a teenager, minimum wage was only $5.25. Obviously, that isn't enough to live off of, and I'm sure most people don't plan on staying there forever. The issue isn't so much the wages as far as I'm concerned. You SHOULD be paid based on your experience, level of education, etc. The problem is, most of those making lower wages get their hours cut because the companies don't want to pay them overtime or have them receive benefits. Also, most of these workers are treated like shyt.
