Microsoft is a software company, that's their bread and butter. Everything else they do is to supplement that, which includes hardware, however that's a small part of the overall company... sure they would love to have crazy popular hardware in homes and businesses that what the Xbox was/is an attempt at.

Sony has never actively pursued software over the years outside of playstation. Microsoft has actively pursued all types of hardware in almost every major consumer electronic market.

Microsoft is a software company first and foremost. It's always been that way.

If they weren't you'd see a closed ecosystem like you do with apple.

Since Satya took over they've shiftted more into being a services company.

The main reason Microsoft is in the hardware space is to show off generational changes in their software. For example, touch in windows 10. Windows hello and azure joined devices with 10h2 >>win 11.

Even as one of the top cloud providers their datacenters aren't filled with MS hardware.

In fact Microsoft doesn't really create much hardesr3 at all. Outside of the controllers xbox hardware is only assembled by MS.

Satya became ceo in 2014. Before that they had a closed eco system just like Sony/Nintendo.

They were making software to push the Xbox hardware. Be it the Kinect, exclusive games, HDMI pass through, or the little faceplates you could buy for the 360.

I know they are generally a software company, but that does not negate the fact from 2000-2014 they were pushing the Xbox console.

Once again I’m specifically talking about the gaming division.

Almost all those products failed or were ended by Microsoft. Saying Microsoft is a hardware company is like saying Google makes products and services you can depend on to be around forever. The irony is Microsoft actually makes good hardware products from time to time but the company just doesn't know how to make them successful.

Microsoft is a software company that dabbles in making hardware to further their software.

This is not untrue.
However, the issue here is scale.

When you're that big, your 'dabbling' in something is still getting funded and market pushed like at least an upper-midcard contender in the space.

Trying to not hold them to a comparable standard when Microsoft even playing around in the hardware space makes them larger than legitimate companies in that very space is disingenuous.

Google deserves mockery for failing when they go into hardware spaces. People laughed they asses off when the Stadia failed, despite it being a new take on the market and that's expected to have it's problems. But because it was Google and they got 'all the money in the world', we laughed at it guilt-free. Same shyt happened to Amazon. Most nikkas don't even know what a Luna is. Yet the second it's MIcrosoft and game consoles; folk want to hand-wave it away like they shouldn't be treated the same as their contemporaries.
