Does the large Caribbean presence in NYC's Hip Hop scene explain the disconnect with other regions?

NEGATIVE. It has nothing to do with it. Rap moved on and Miami disproves your point, there are more carib blacks living there...and they're doing Afram music...they're not saying "jamaicans invented this". They just rap and participate. You might see a flag or hear "sak pase"..and some kreyol.
People talmbat Kodak Black. He's Zoe.
No anti afram talk from him at all.

I've moved past the point, the premise of the thread was to question why the dominant Hip Hop culture in NY is so vastly different from the dominant Hip Hop culture in other regions. It occurred to me that the demographics in NY's black population are pretty vastly different from other regions and to an extent that's represented fairly notably in its Hip Hop population, clearly New Yorkers (or at least the AA ones) don't think that's the reason though.

NEW YORK HAD IT FIRST. Has nothing to do with ethnicity.
It's a supremacy thing x Car culture x living in cramped spaces vs living in open spaces.
Philly is quite similar and you can't make the same argument. Everything about their scene is UNapologetically black...

Philly's also different from the rest of the country though in that the 5% nation/NOI was HUGE there. The music reflects that and given the roots of NY Hip Hop and the shift in the early/mid 80s towards spiritual and political awakening, it's not that surprising that Philly ended up being largely in sync with New York.

However, even Philadelphia is more in tune with the rest of the country. You can hear it in the subject matter as well as the sampling/production choices.

also, their demographics aren't vastly different...they just cling to "special snowflake" identities because being exotic is what's in.
Nobody brown skinned wants to be "plain old black"
That's why dark skinned girls say they're mixed with random shyt you can't see. It started in NY.

They're black but they're not African American. If nobody in your family tree was in this country during slavery (whether they were enslaved or not), you're not us.

No, 5%ers and NOI don't have that much of a presence in Philly. they're Sunni, breh.
they're also responsible for a lot of NYC's hip hop innovations...No Pop Art = No Juice crew.
You forget about Gamble and Huff...TSOP. They got the funk in 'em.
What about places like mass and ct? oh wait, no identity.

The Bronx
A LIFESTYLE.
You're in school 8 hours of the day as a kid.
Going to and coming from school? I'd give that an hour each.
That's 10 hours.
People sleep 8 hours a night and kids play outside and talk to their friends...I'll give "outside time" around 2 hours.
That's 20 hours of non-parental time a day minus weekends, where kids are: Trying to be outside with their friends from the neighborhood. Kicking it with people they met on the block or at school.
People spend more time with their friends and classmates than they do with their parents.
Also: Most caribs are working parents...that's even LESS time.
Assimilation is real. You can eat all the patties you want, if you speak like us, that's it.
Ethnicity is meaningless in the face of a larger mass.
Also: In certain cities, they don't even HAVE other black ethnic groups.
Everybody thinks you're black. Nothing but black people around...no cultural links outside of parents, guess what?
That kid is more us than yard.

Most non AAs don't live in areas where there are only AAs. A lot of immigrant groups are concentrated. I dont interact with mostly AAs and never had a circle of majority AAs at any point in my life.

They're us culturally, just not ethnically. I'm just saying that those cultures get washed out.
If the child of two jamaicans moves to cinci, she's gonna be assimilated. Ain't no jakes out there. She will have a baby by a Cinci nikka and that will be that. No coco bread, no rice beans, no nothing else.

There's Sunnis and NOI in Philly, some of the biggest Hip Hop figureheads in Philly (like Black Thought) are NOI or came into being Muslim via the NOI (Beanie Siegel). Not all of them obviously (see Freeway) but quite a few did.

Philly is majority Sunni, breh. Chicago and Detroit are more NOI oriented.

It's funny how the narrative keeps shifting...y'all say you don't live around US, but the places y'all live weren't established or opened up by non AA blacks. We got that started and y'all came to live among us (yet keep your trinket-driven culture...lol)...So what is it FOR REAL?
