I wouldn't say they were trash but they didn't do what Sony wanted. Sony themselves said that in those leaked emails. Which is what led to the Marvel deal in the first place.
I feel like most of the people in this thread forgot those emails leaked. Where Sony was pretty much like "we don't know what to do with Spider-Man". But now people want Sony to have full control over the character....again.

It's not as way off as you think. Phase 4 isn't as long as other phases since we already know Blade represents phase 5 and they haven't said anything about movies that were already announced such as GOTG 3 BP2 and Captian Marvel 2. Disney + also streamlines things even faster now.

You're right in regards to the letter but IMO, this IS a move towards Disney trying to take Spiderman back.
Sony owns the movie license for all of these Spiderman characters. This 50/50 co-finance deal would be a way for Disney to in practice own half of the license, not just for Spidey, but Venon and the rest of the gallery that Sony Pictures wants to make movies for. Under a new deal, Sony would not be able to make anymore movies with these characters unless Disney is eating with them, so it would be like Marvel Studios owns the license again. And at that point, with Feige integrating all of those characters into the MCU, it would be very hard for Sony to ever pull out of this agreement and start over. The Mouse's prints would be over everything. So while it wouldn't happen immediately, you could see Disney going back to Sony in 2030 wanting to up the ante even more in their favor
Disney is playing the long game. This is a major power move towards taking Spiderman back. Once they are at 50/50 profits and co-financing for all Spiderman related projects, they would effectively have the licences back, even if not in name.
