How many times is this going to be debated :dahell:
Chappelle made his rounds for years but never really stood out because it was nothing special about him at the time
His show hit and he became a house hold name as every one from white frats boys, ppl in the hood, and 50 yr old office cacs were saying "fukk yo couch" and"am i gonna have to smack a bytch"

Aries Spears have been doing the same act for years and have decades in the game.
Netflix offered him $100K for an hour special, but he didn’t have any other impressions he could do to fill the time slot. :lolbron::troll:

i don't get why they bring this up? are they disappointed that black people are allegedly late to the goatness? or do they think it takes something away from Dave....

on the other hand... idk who tk kirkland is by name alone

It's more so that people are trying to re-write history.

Aint nobody ever accused Dave of being a fraud, stealing jokes or doing sucker shyt to get ahead....they're only factually stating that Dave Chappelle was not as popular with blacks in the 90's as his counterparts were.

people in this thread really making Half Baked out to be this blockbuster comedy, when in reality it's a cult classic. Just cause that shyts been on Comedy Central once a week for the last 15+ years don't mean it was killing it in 98.

yeah but what's the point in stating the obvious, and in faizon's case with a negative tone, dave said it in public before the both of them did.

hit U.S. theaters on January 16, 1998, earning $7,722,540 in its opening weekend, ranking #6, and, by the end of its run, grossed $17,460,020.[1] With the estimated budget being $8 million,[2] the film can be considered a box office success.

Critical reception[edit]
Half Baked received generally negative reviews, currently holding a 29% "Rotten" rating by critics based on 24 reviews.[3] On Metacritic, the film received a score of 16 out of 100, indicating "overwhelming dislike".[4] However, the film has garnered a high cult following with an 81% audience approval rating.[5]

This is from Wikipedia, Half-Baked was a flop, so which white people were checking for Dave? The ones that didn't go watch his movie?

It's overlooked.

There are plenty of people out there who don't know Dave Chappelle for anything pre-Chappelles Show and Half Baked.

Kirkland sounds like a hater always talking bout chapelle

Obviously chapelle needed a huge white audience to elevate him to where he's at now, u can't get to his level only appealing to one demographic

Dave got so big and successful cuz his humor is relatable to everyone

I first remember Dave Chappelle from undercover brother:yeshrug:

But he wasn't superstar status until the show

Dave addressed this in his Netflix standup. He came up in DC, but his big breaks were all white audiences and half baked which was the quintessential stoner comedy for white youth.

Watch his first def jam appearance. Not many laughs compared to a Chris Tucker.
Exactly

Dave Chappelle wasn't a household name amongst the Black Community until the Chappelle show came out and black people loved Charlie Murphy skits on the show... that's what really made the show popular

Half Baked is whiteboy stoner humor.

Yeah but, nikkas didn't know him. We just recognized him as the ugly skinny nikka that had smaller roles in other movies.

If we talkin stand up comedy dave Chappelle couldn't hold his weight in comparison to the plethora of 90's black comedians.

Then why was he getting film roles? If he was so small?
