Phil Spencer can't manage a studio to save his life, like someone else said. He acquires studios and leaves them to die. Microsoft has to get someone with an iron hand who can force these studios to produce on a reasonable schedule.

There is zero reason that with all the dev talent they acquired, Microsoft shouldn't have a killer game lineup.

It's wild that they have two IP that were icons in console FPS games and in innovative console cover shooters (Halo, Gears of War), and now those IP mean very little. That is all on Spencer ruining what the OG Xbox and 360 were able to build.

One game doesn’t change much of anything Hifi rush is just as much as plenty of other games that get the arbitrary AAA distinction. We just gotta say it doesn’t to keep narratives alive :francis:

No its the truth, because exclusive games are about building the identity and reputation of the platform, or else why would they exist? If your biggest exclusive in two years is a game that doesn’t have physical copies on shelves, commercials, ad placement amongst casual consumers, merch, etc. whats it doing to build the brand?

Hi Fi Rush being AA means that there isn’t a significant marketing budget being poured into it which mean it doesn’t have much reach beyond the people who already subscribe to gamepass or own an xbox.

It does help to rebuild some of the confidence in the brand but that alone is not going to drown out the last 10 years

Those two IP are still very popular when they come out. There’s just lots more competition.

Phil Spencer reminds me of Rick Ross or other rappers who own their own sub label. Ifts like they talk a big game, and they can sell themselves fine but when it comes to managing others and making sure their products are good they just don’t have what it takes.

Halo looking like Staley, and Redfall looking like Maybach O

Hear you go again thinking multiplatform games are 1:1 on every platform. The reason why there are more fortnite players on playstation than xbox is because sony made their platform more attractive to play on. How did they do that? Spider-man, God of War, Gran Turismo, Last of Us, etc.

Theres no skirting around the significance of exclusive content. You need games

Wii U had the same software output as any other nintendo console. It flopped for other reasons. Exclusive software itself doesn’t sell hardware.
Yeah, that WiiU Animal Crossing and WiiU Metroid were great, huh? :troll:

Seriously, though, WiiU was notorious for barely having any games come out for it the last two years. I agree with you that exclusive software itself doesn't sell hardware. You're not wrong.

But when there's not a lot of delineation between two different hardware options, what sells people? The games. What games are the biggest differentiators? Exclusive ones.

And it's important to note that hardware matters less than software - the Switch is an underbaked piece of hardware, but it doesn't matter because of the a) pricing, b) form factor options, and c) the slew of games that Nintendo's producing for it. You can't see the wild attach rates that Nintendo's first-party games are having and say that exclusive software isn't massive. It doesn't sell hardware itself, but it's too significant a factor to ignore.

The whole “big exclusives don’t matter” mantra is whats going to ultimately be the death of the xbox brand, but their stans won’t believe it until ti happens then it will be some other conspiracy like sony working in the shadows.
I don’t see why they don’t see the vision. Both Nintendo and Sony aren’t the successes they are without exclusives. It’s pathetic Phil admitting defeat when Microsoft has more developers than both. They got enough mascots especially on the Rare side to compete with Nintendo. There other game divisions should be able to compete with Sony in terms of triple AAA quality but Microsoft refuses to take risks with them.

It’s gotdamn shame we haven’t heared of a new Killer Instinct for Christ sakes.

he says they should have got more involved in Redfall sooner
Why is it always some after the fact "we should have..." bullshyt with him?

Why is he not visiting these studios and making sure they aren't just burning money up on trash games? We hear stories about Sony leadership checking in and playing games during development, making suggestions and adding pressure to release a quality product. We hear the same type of behavior from nintendo.

Why don't we hear the same type of shyt about Phil Spencer? Especially since dude claims to be a gamer, he should know during a games development if it's trash or not and direct his studios to make changes.

He's not wrong that Starfield won't make somebody abandon PS5 for Series X or build a gaming PC. Most people aren't going to abandon PlayStation for Xbox due to built up digital library from PS4 gen. I don't think a person will abandon 100+ games built up from PS+ and digital purchases, especially with consoles going forward will be backward compatible.

However, I think the answer is MS needs Starfield to be as good as fallout 4 and release consistently good products. I think MS does a good job in AA space, but they need to improve quality in AAA for games that aren't the holy trinity of Gears, Forza, and Halo. If they hit on Starfield, Perfect Dark, Fable, Avowed, and other AAAs then I believe some PlayStation gamers will buy an xbox as a 2nd console. Then if they buy a console they can experience gamepass and maybe that service will keep them in the ecosystem, but that's not a guarantee since PS+ Extra is a competitive service imo because there's alot of overlap with gamepass

Your first point about competition is true. So how does Mario or Zelda or God of War or TLOU stay relevant with all this increased competition, but Halo and Gears have lesser relevance? Management, or the mismanagement thereof.

I expect these studios to make transcendent games like EAD or Santa Monica or Naughty Dog are considered to do on the regular. That they don't is down to mismanagement.

And its just disingenuous because we saw the energy was very different all around the internet, and especially on here when halo and forza released in 2021. I saw numerous “sony stans” say they were going out to get an xbox, people were on cloud 9 around that time, a lot of enthusiasm.

Then they lost all momentum in 2022. And every single person that currently owns an xbox right now is hoping and praying that Starfield is the game they want it to be because at the end of the day everyone wants big ‘event’ games on their favorite platform. When peopel talk about the future of xbox they rarely bring up gamepass or xcloud, its always Hellblade 2, Avowed, Perfect Dark, Fable, etc.

These are the games people truly want on xbox. To deny it is just spiting yourself.
