I think it is the best part. The movie is not about the buildup to a domestic civil war or good guys vs bad guys. It is about the horror of civil war, the loss of civil structure, and the coverage and narcissism / mentality of those who cover it. The reality of war and what it does to citizens and the press hunting glory.

Adding the politics or worse, the gi joe vs cobra aspect to it would honestly ruin the movie to me. I was pro the union naturally more until they gave more (just enough) exposition on the president. It is clear what side is responsible for where we’re at, which is what makes act 3 feel more palpable. More than that, and we’re in “Olympus has fallen” territory.

I hear you but they kind of implied some things about the president that would make one think he was 'bad' with the little they did give you. For the other factions nothing really was shown about the hand they play. I`m not saying they should force feed us who is good vs bad, but even putting little things out here and their so we could connect the dots would make sense. For ex unless I missed it, with Meth Damon we don't know what 'side' he was on even though we could get the gist of his ideology. It's fine to not do it but like I said if thats the case we could remove the little nuggets that implied the president was 'bad'/overusing his power (the mention of the 3rd term, dude wanting to give the speech/last words to him implying this was all his fault, etc)

I think that was just so the siege on the white house (literally just that scene) was more black and white considering the level of executions and the last shot of the movie. I hear you though. I prefer it as is, but get your point.

Just seen the film a second time, this time in IMAX. I still think this movie is certified A. I've been watching Sundance films live in Utah for the last few years and this feels exactly like something that would be featured at the festival. Although this one debuted at SXSW.

I feel this movie bait and switched. It was presented as a movie that would focus on the Civil War, which is an amazing concept but they went a bit deeper into the individual journey and emotion and psyche of those who endure war, its more of a psychological and visual rollercoaster of war than a tale of the Civil War itself. So the Civil War concept really got put on the backburner to tell another story. To me this movie is very dark and twisted with just the right dash of dark humor.

So while I think they missed the mark to tell the story of Civil War better.. To me, their cinematography, effective use of the element of surprise, intensity, capture of the coldness of war, and storytelling on the cerebral experience of those involved in covering the Civil War made up for it.

Lee was so cold and rough and rightfully so. The film showed how war can do that to someone to survive and the moment she showed some warmth, bam, she's gone, just like Sammie.

For me, the real magic is watching it through the lens of those journalists, feeling their mental strain. The movie masterfully uses silence and wide shots to paint the horrors of war.

There was one scene after they narrowly escaped a sniper’s bullet. The silence between Jessie and Joel was crazy they were petrified silent crying/yelling in fear looking at each other. And then the next scene transitions to Jessie puking on herself. The whole experience was silence, no words but was visually powerful.

The entire movie I just was kinda surprised how them Levi’s had Jesse ass looking..

Outside of that :yeshrug:
Yea, she was looking right...

Movie was solid. Saw it in Dolby and was startled quite a few times. Last scene was incredible.

My only gripe was Dunst being the only one to realize the president was still in the white house. And I know I'm probably wrong for this take but the overall self-importance of the media and journalism was a bit heavy-handed. Like I get why it's important they get the truth out there but TODAY, we seem to learn more truth from people on their cell phones than what we see and read in the news. That should have been incorporated into the story somehow.

I think if anything without the nuggets of the president + also showing the USA giving folks that work it would be more impactful to the 'division' and 'is war worth it' angle.

In retrospect
WF ran a train on the USA and the president got what he deserved lol it's like Why save the USA or even care

at least thats how I took it.

It's obvious that the WF are the libs and the Loyalists, New People's Alliance (North), and Florida Alliance are conservatives are the conservatives. Just look at how they're uniforms are plus the racial makeup of the forces.

It's not as undefined as some of yall are trying to make it seem. They just never outright say it on the nose. The casting is not by accident. Meth Damon's glasses weren't red for no reason.

yeah would have been good to have parallel POV story lines, the formal media + corruption, the person on the ground trying to survive, and someone fighting. but they may be asking for too much and once again better suited for a mini series

I found it weird that the whole race war thing isn't part of the backdrop for this movie, because at the end of the day that's what all these right wing nationalists are all about.

I haven't seen it, but I think it's sheer cowardice not to address it if that's the case
I feel like the whole Charlottesville aspect was race-related. Even the old black dude was on some "Do I have to say why going to Charlottesville is important to me?"

in what world would Cali and TX join forces. Granted this is fictional so you can imagine what you want lol but the division didn't make sense thus people are like ok what's each sides angle

It's implied that the internet ain't as accessible as it is right now. And that a lot of journalists have died (dude said "what's left of the NY Times"). Plus most civilians are just trying to survive, not go around and chase clout.

The big cities are liberal enough to make it believable in my eyes. Plus it could be a resource thing. They definitely could have tried to make it make more sense though.
