Captain America was an iconic character before Iron Man even existed. They were making films about Captain America back in the 1940's.

The bolded is demonstrably false. Marvel never expected Ironman to be as big as it was. If they did they wouldn't have cast a notorious recovering drug addict. The enormous success was a giant surprise.

I think you sleeping on just how popular Captain America was and still is.
Iron Man is definitely more popular NOW, but before the movie Cap was more popular. Captain America had one of the best selling and critically acclaimed comic books before the first Iron Man film came out. In fact when they "killed" Captain America in the comics that shyt made the news.
As for the Avengers Cap has always been as integral to the team as Iron Man and Thor. They're the "Big Three" of the Avengers and always have been.

You do realize they had been working on that film for years right? Bigger names were even attached to the movie at one point. Tom Cruise was originally supposed to star in the film.
Also RDJ wasn't even the first actor to sign on for the film series and he had to audition to get the role.
And you've still yet to answer my question about what RDJ brought to Iron Man tha hadn't already been a part of the character for decades.

Most Hollywood actors aren't known, notorious recovering drug addicts. Downey Jr. was an actor who people thought threw his career away before Iron Man.
Check people's reviews of any Ironman film, critic or average moviegoer. Chances are the first thing they'll mention is Downey Jr.
Even though the character had been around for decades, there had never been a live action Ironman. And most people who've seen the movies never read the comics, so Tony Stark was as fresh as Jack Sparrow to them.
