Before the movies, you could argue that Ironman was less popular than Hulk, Wolverine, Daredevil, Thor, and Captain America. And yet Ironman movies make far more money than any of those franchises. Why? RDJ.
Besides comic book readers, who actually gave a fukk about Iron Man 10 years ago?
Marvel should be grateful towards RDJ for turning a B-level superhero into a household name and a billion dollar movie franchise.
You don't, but the vast majority of people do. You think Marvel is seeing all those reviews, dating back to the first movie, talking about RDJ made the movies, he's Tony Stark, they can't imagine anybody else as him....you seriously think they're reading that shyt like "who cares about RDJ?".
Fred.
Finally a voice of reason.
If Marvel could get by on character recognition alone RDJ wouldn't have a leg to stand on. But he got Marvel like because they know he's Iron Man.
Fred.
Speaking to EW, Feige said that Stark could follow the lead of other franchise movie characters who have changed actors.
"I believe there will be a fourth Iron Man and a fifth, sixth and a 10th and a 20th," he said. "I see no reason why Tony Stark can't be as evergreen as James Bond, Batman, or for that matter, Spider-Man."
I'm saying. If you would've told me back in the day that an "Avengers" movie would make a billy and that "Ironman" would be a lucrative franchise I would've because the obvious choice would've been X-Men.

Iron man is a minor character in the Marvel Universe comics.
What does RDJ add to the character that wasn't already there? seriously, name me ONE thing that Robert Downey Jr has done with that character that hadn't been done YEARS before.
Also what big box office smash hit did RDJ star in before Iron Man?

That doesn't matter one fukking bit. All that matters is that in the consciousness of the average movie goer, RDJ IS Ironman. There are no substitutes. Any replacement will cost Marvel tens of millions of dollars. If there were any suitable replacements, RDJ wouldn't be raking Marvel over the coals like this.
The closest example to this I can think of is if Disney tried recasting Jack Sparrow. Can't be done.

Actually it does, because you're saying the only reason the movie made that kind of bank or got any attention is because of RDJ's Star Power. He had NEVER been a part of a movie that big before.
The Jack Sparrow comparison doesn't match because Depp actually put a LOT into bringing that character to life and it wasn't a character that had been around for decades and already had a degree of public awareness.
And you still haven't answered my question, what did RDJ add to the character of Tony Stark that wasn't already there?
If you want to say he played the role perfectly, fine, but lets not act like he completely reinvented the character.
