this is Chicago, Granny probably already has a .38 in the cut... Chicago's biggest problem, Gang violence will not be affected by this law whatsoever... Do people realize most of the guns in Chicago are purchased legally about 20 minutes outside of the city? I went to a gun shop in Dolton IL and saw "thuggish" fellow with a pitchfork tattoo buying an assault rifle

I doubt he is a hunter...

What it does is keeps the gang violence out of the public square. When you pull that heat you have to now factor in the fact that joe blow may be in the cut ready to blow you away when you endanger civilians with your nonsense. It allows thugs to police themselves and keep their dealings where they belong. In private and out of the public eye. We should only be hearing about bodies found in vacant lots/abandoned houses/rivers/lakes streams.

I agree but the violence is mostly criminal on criminal and there is no guarantee that people will take advantage of this. Not to mention the people who will take advantage of this will most likely be white males who aren't really targets for robberies anyways... I really don't think Chicago's biggest problem will be affected because of this change.

I think you might under estimate the black men and women in chicago that illegally own handguns, and have for years, solely for protection. People here want to protect themselves. This will give them the chance to do it legally. I live right across the border in Indiana, and we've always had a concealed carry law. We've also been the murder capital. As I got older, I noticed that the hoodlums usually didnt get the permit anyway, but the people with familes, property, and shyt to protect did. I got my permit to carry at 21, and other than a couple of nikka moments (not on my end), I've never drawn on anyone.

We live in a gun culture. I think it's better to embrace and educate than to try to expell it. I hope it cuts down the violence, I think an armed citizen is a safe citizen. Illinois isn't letting these permits go easily either, there's a manditory 6 hr course for residents, and I have to take a 3 hr course as a permit holding non resident. There are other stipulations that I can't quite remember. But I honestly believe when this law is passes the crime against law abiding citizens will go down.

The black/white thing wont play too big of a role because the whole Chicagoland area is heavily segregated.

if most of the gun violence is between gang members who already carry guns... How is concealed carry going to cause crime to go down? It is mostly criminals committing crime against criminals

I am pro gun rights, but the connection the threadstarter is making, escapes me.

If you go looking for trouble you will find it. People like Chris B love trouble so...

but joe blow is already in the cut with a firearm... This is CHICAGO... Just because joe blow's gun is recognized legally now won't change anything in my opinion...

this is where I definitely agree... Non criminal folks in Chitown carry weapons or own them in general anyways... Which is why I dont think this law will change anything... Only thing it will change is less arrests for people illegally carrying or owning in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong.. I am all for the conceal carry law. I just dont think it will change anything in a city like Chicago...

Ok I feel ya. I think I got caught up trying to force an argument a lil bit. I definitely dont think there will be a dramatic difference in the crime rate, thats an issue thats much deeper than guns. Bunch of people with that "project" mentality. And now that the projects are knocked down, it's still gonna take several generations to cleanse that way of thinking.

The majority of the murders are happening between gang members and people involved in the drug trade. The gangs exist because of poverty and economic inequality. The drugs trade exists because people want them and there is poverty and economic inequality. The gang situation exists because instead of solving the problems of poverty and economic inequality, the feds and police destroyed the traditional structures of the gangs apart, and now they are unstable and chaotic.

But, somehow if Wrigleyville can have conceal-carry when they go downtown or drive through the South Side, everything will solve itself...

What I dont understand in the pro gun debate is, how are you going to protect yourself if someone has a gun pointed in your face? Do you think they are going to give you time to pull your gun out? If I were a criminal and thought someone might be carrying a concealed gun I would wait to pull my gun out until I was right in your face so you wouldnt have time to react or I would simply shoot you and kill you before I robbed you rather than just intimidating you and making you empty your pockets.

Shhh...can't bring logic into a gun control thread.

These dudes are too pumped up on action movies and comic books for that. They think civilians with concealed weapons will all have expert-level judgment, superhero reflexes, and the aim of people with years of military training.

I see it has been pointed out that plenty of civilians carry for protection in grimey neighborhoods. This would be decriminalizing what they already do, and might lead to less gun charges for black folk. I would need to read more about this though.

Here in Minneapolis, there is carry/conceal, and the crime rate is comparable to a major Canadian city, but I don't think they're related. I think more so is the large social safety net that exists here, unlike in other places. Plus the Northside here (the hood) has never been as bad as the SouthSide Chicago. Gangs here aren't that bad either and the economy is decent. There also isn't a history of racial tension and segregation here like in Chicago.

It's not a 100% type of thing. It's not like you having a gun means you win the battle every time, sometimes you just lose. Even cops get shot. But on the flip side, not every criminal has a gun.

To really understand the importance of this carry law, I'm just going to back track a second on Chicago's specific gun laws. For years, you couldn't own a handgun, even if you shot an intruder, you would go to jail for possession of a handgun. Last year, the supreme court forced Chicago to allow citizens to purchase handguns. Now you have to go through a bunch of loops to get one, but it's obtainable. The kicker is, you can't leave your immediate dwelling. So if your daughter pulls the car in the garage and someone follows her in and attacks her, legally, you can't fire on him.

This law now gives those citizens who want to protect themselves, the legal capability to do so. Most of these citizens want to follow the law, but not at the expense of personal security. The fact of it all is that you can't take guns off of the street. The country, not just the inner cities, are saturated with guns. Legal and illegal. If you ban guns, criminals still have them. So what can you do? The city of Chicago reduced it's police force and will only respond to crimes of immediate danger.
Chicago police no longer responding to all 911 calls

It can be a very dangerous place to be, and the citizens want to be able to legally arm themselves.

Don't put yourself in a situation where you would be shot.

You are more likely to get shot in America by a black man than a white man.
:stupid: People get shot for looking at someone the "wrong" way. Ever hear of road rage? Human beings are too fukkin irrational, and hot headed without carrying guns let alone with them.
