A Villa Straylight.
this is the issue, it makes it hard for us to talk about the ineffectiveness of what was implemented as racist will jump on it as "See it is an issue"

similar to BLM the concept/statement vs the shyt Show org
DEI is supposed be reparation for racist hiring practices. People forget there was a time when no matter how qualified you were you wouldn't get hired as a black person.

They use it to box out Black Masculinity and it counts as a double play for diversity, a gay whatever + Black person fulfills their diversity quota.

If there is one person the corporate/tech world hates the most, it is a regular Black Man...

It's exhausting dealing with these demons...

DEI really meant everyone but Black Men, all the other token minorities and yaas queen swirlers ate off the death of George Floyd which is sickening.
You also failed to mention that DEI for many organizations also means getting a DEI Coordinator that's an Asian woman or a white-ish Hispanic woman, and many of us KNOW many are white-adjacent.

I am actually talking with another organization about a role and the guy that recommended me is a white guy. We just got along well and we were in the trenches together. The issue I have right now is that the first time in my career I have a manager that's a Black man, and he gets it. He knows this shyt isn't for us but our company does pretty well with diversity and this was before George Floyd. I'm thinking about chasing the bag but this guys mentorship is serving dividends for me. We're ultimate all we got in Corporate, especially in tech.

Our conversations generally surround navigating corporate as Black men. No general gems, but he protects me and tells me I have to do more to save myself from the wolves in my field.

I work with AI stuff right now and he says that we should work on getting more stuff out because we as Blacks are the last to adopt a technology. He agrees that as Black Men we are double taxed. I am remote so some stuff we want to talk about will have to wait until we're in person to be honest.

This Muslim brutha from used to know from the Central African Republic, who used to live in Europe told me in some countries over there would require photos with your resume.

He told me how much easier it is for him to get jobs here. He would get straight up denied just based off his photo (a dark skin man, with a big nose and big lips...all the features white people hate).

Ive been denied jobs for being black, pretty sure like most of us. In an early 2010s I walked into a job and the manager looked at me shocked and apologized because they wanted to hire a woman. Imagine a "Jeffrey Fort Campbell Jr" walks into your office, you're gonna tell me from the name on the resume, you didn't know?

The DEI movement was always a grift. People made a lot of money from it and companies dumped money into it to run from any racism accusations. Once they realized they couldn’t make money off it, the spigot ended. I dont feel bad for it ending because DEI was never intended to challenge Power or change the dynamics, and the people who collected checks knew that.

If we go by connections made, i can still climb ladders where complexions fade.

I know some of you will preach that you hate your job and hate your coworkers, but even if you have to pretend, try to be amicable with people you work with when you can. Your next opportunity could come from someone you rubbed the right way. Not saying to suck dikk or anything, and you still need to be qualified, so you're still gonna need to put in the work, but it would be wise to use all the tools at your disposal.

I've worked in large enterprise and F50 companies my whole career. I've met cool and shytty people. I've met some good black people and some who were in positions they had no business being in. I've also seen bosses fukk with people and the only conclusion i could come up with is... because they're black.. I've also had people look out for me who i never would've thought would just because of a random conversation. Your mileage may vary, but the grind doesn't stop.
this is literally the same conclusion every successful black person ive talked to ends up with

Thanks. I’ll make another thread on navigating corporate and moving up the ladder

"DEI" as a function has been existing for decades now.
I don't think it's a failure IMO, I just think we're in the very early stages of a transition into
corporate life for Black Americans.

You have to remember that the current crop of Gen X and Millenials are some of THE VERY FIRST
people in their family to get a college education and even work these kinds of jobs.
Like I'm technically second gen but due to how early 2010s played out, I effectively started over
and navigated everything BY MYSELF like a 1st gen student.

I’m not going to say you’re wrong, but… there’s too many white folks railing against it for me to say it failed. It must’ve done something right with the fact that people have started campaigns to get rid of it and all. Carry on though :hubie:

My exact opinion

I think it's a willingness to play the game. I'll admit I got lucky because I'm sure there's more qualified folks around me. I'm personable, hard working, and persistent in any role I take. It also helps to have a sense of humor and mind your appearance a bit. When I was more in the office I'd dress one dress code above my peers. Some people thought I was management. I also tend to have a dry sense of humor. I DON'T kiss ass which maybe offers some degree of respect.

It helped seeing both my parents operate in Corporate though.

You do have to participate and play. Nothing will be given to you and no one cares about you unless you're easy to work with and help them deliver outcomes IMO

DEI is no different than EOE, which stands for Equal Opportunity Employer, both have similar connections to each other.

For the so-called Black folks on here who want these practices removed, why? What benefits do you see in these programs being eliminated? Y'all cry about Black people not getting jobs, but then the next minute, advocate for programs to be cut that have been beneficial for years, even for yourself, whether you acknowledge it or not.

There are many jobs many of you have held in your lifetimes that you probably would've never had happened without these incentives due to racism and the biased bigotry of employers. Y'all put too much trust in White folks to “do the right thing” or become duped into thinking simply being American means they'll “look out for you,” which, as of late, has become a recurring theme around here lately.
