These are facts. This might be a hot take but I do think USA has better hiring practices than most other nations when it comes to black folks. I’m not saying things are perfect at all but from what I’ve seen across the world it’s better. We still have a long way to go. We have a lot of brilliant blk folks

Black people are more visible in America than in most white countries. The average white person can easily access the best in Black culture here in media and in public spaces. Where they don’t know who we are it’s bound to be more difficult.

The scammer/call center ones sure, I'm talking legit fotb/armpits and everything, not the Oreos...

Nikki (Nimrata) Haley and Bobby (Piyush) Jindal are who I usually think of when it comes to Indians that change their names to cater to whites.

What were the goals and claims?

And was it supposed to be like a flat thing across the board, consistent from company to company?

Like every company no matter the industry it’s supposed to be the same thing?
Like the clip I shared, companies made promises
1. Increase Representation:
2. Promote Equity:
3. Foster Inclusion:
4. Enhance Company Culture:
5. Drive Business Performance:

Black America failed by allowing ourselves to be lumped in the minority box.

White women and Asians gained using minority as their term.

Latinos gained by using minority indigenous and POC.

Black people didn’t get shyt but Tv commercials and lip service.

Should have separated ourselves from that long ago.
I wouldn't say we failed, I'd say we were learning as we went along. Whites use language as a weapon, and that's a hard lesson we've had to learn. And for the most part, at least among the younger crowd, I'd say we've learned it. It's people like Tavis Smiley still running around on the "people of color" or the "Black and brown" shyt.

This Muslim brutha from used to know from the Central African Republic, who used to live in Europe told me in some countries over there would require photos with your resume.

He told me how much easier it is for him to get jobs here. He would get straight up denied just based off his photo (a dark skin man, with a big nose and big lips...all the features white people hate).

Ive been denied jobs for being black, pretty sure like most of us. In an early 2010s I walked into a job and the manager looked at me shocked and apologized because they wanted to hire a woman. Imagine a "Jeffrey Fort Campbell Jr" walks into your office, you're gonna tell me from the name on the resume, you didn't know?
:skip:
Happened to me in 2023. Mofo saw my resume and everything but when my baldheaded black ass showed up on camera, that cac's face looked like he'd seen a ghost. He made up a shytty excuse about how he just looked at my resume during the interview and that he was actually looking to interview a candidate for a Data Engineer role and not a Data Scientist like the job description stated. Needless to say I hit him with the :mjpls: before thanking him for his time and ending that call. Whole video call lasted 4 min tops.

If we go by connections made, i can still climb ladders where complexions fade.

I know some of you will preach that you hate your job and hate your coworkers, but even if you have to pretend, try to be amicable with people you work with when you can. Your next opportunity could come from someone you rubbed the right way. Not saying to suck dikk or anything, and you still need to be qualified, so you're still gonna need to put in the work, but it would be wise to use all the tools at your disposal.

I've worked in large enterprise and F50 companies my whole career. I've met cool and shytty people. I've met some good black people and some who were in positions they had no business being in. I've also seen bosses fukk with people and the only conclusion i could come up with is... because they're black.. I've also had people look out for me who i never would've thought would just because of a random conversation. Your mileage may vary, but the grind doesn't stop.

I used to keep myself to myself at jobs and that got me zilch.

Started playing the game more at my new job. Made sure I was in the office on the 2 in office days, made my face and name known, got to know the people who make decisions, speak up in meetings and more importantly socialize with my workmates.

Maybe because it’s an international team here, I've never really felt :mjpls: vibes. And trust me I know when those vibes are in the air. When I lived in the UK I was in film production. That has plenty of those uncomfortable vibes from a few folks there who are wondering why I was there and not behind the security desk or a cleaner.

I did learn that you have to create connections though as that's the only way you advance. In my current role I go to dinners and hangouts where management level people are going. If someone feels comfortable socializing with you they'll make things a lot easier in giving you a heads up on things like job opportunities.

And despite what some on the coli say. You don't have to c00n and deny your blackness.

I’m very aware I’m black and move accordingly.

I remember a white friend of mine suggested me for a job designing movie titles into different languages at a trailer production house. A nice foot in the door as I’d gone to uni to train. Turn up to the interview and the guy who was doing the interview gave me the limpest handshake. Wouldn’t make any eye contact, then was trying to talk me out of the job, saying surely you’d be bored?

I told him this is what I’ve been training for, and I’d be open to the opportunity.

Didn’t hear back from him, its funny some white guys I knew who knew him said this guy was a dikkhead bully who liked to shout and scream at his staff, probably saw me and knew that wasn’t going to run.

In the end it was better as I got a job at another place with better pay and people.

100% this. I now work for a large (top 5 tech company) for the first time in my career. Previously I worked only for small startups where I didn't have to play the networking game. Here it was made clear that to get promo to the next level, you gotta have cross-team impact and be liked and respected by multiple teams in your organization. I've been forcing myself to engage in that meaningless morning small talk, join coworkers on their smoke breaks to chat (I dont smoke), sit with multiple people and talk about meaningless shyt during lunch (no more sitting alone) and always be ready to help whoever might be in a bind. Thats the only way to get ahead. I've met a few guys already at my level here who are talented but are your classic nerd type who haven't had promo in over 5 years because they refuse to socialize with people at work. Couldn't be me :picard:

When did DEI even start?
Well, the provisions, protections, etc of anti-discriminatory practices in the workforce have been around for decades since the Civil Rights Bill passing, but within the past 2-3 years, it started getting attraction from far-right and conservative media due to the rebranding of anti-discrimination laws, hence the term DEI which stands for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Before that, there was no term, but many of them existed within the same realm of the Equal Opportunity Employer mandates, among other United States anti-discriminatory workplace requirements.

It's kinda weird that all of a sudden it's become a big deal since it's pretty much been a part of the Civil Rights Bill in different wording. It's important to highlight that it doesn't just cover anti-discrimination against race, ethnicity, and gender/sexual orientation but also those with physical and mental disabilities as well as being elderly looking for employment. People don't talk about it as much because they're soo focused on the race and gender/sexual shyt but there's a lot of discrimination aimed at individuals who are elderly or have disabilities within the workplace.

The racial and gender/sexual orientation (gay/LGBT) aspects of these protections are what ticked off Conservative and Far-Right politicians and media heads to get these laws rolled back.

DEI has been around as long as Affirmative Action under different mandates (EOE) and categorizations, but unlike AA, it didn't have an acronym or its separate law, basically for much of its existence these protections weren't called DEI, so it never drew as much attention until these last 2 years or so when the term became popularized along with the increasing tension towards race/ethnicity-based and gender/sexual orientation policies.
