I did a bit more detail here: Black men attendance fall at HBCUs -- some details
Black Women havent been “propped up”’more then men. They just were set for the changing world than Black men.
Black men came up in this country still have the mindset of my father in law who finished HS, came up north, got a job as a bus driver and on his salary was able to buy a home and take care of his family. Black men historically made it in this country through the manufacturing industry while the only alternative for Black women other than being a domestic was to go to finish school. The manufacturing sector in this country has died since the early 80s and Black men collectively have yet to make the adjustment. Meanwhile, Black women, who if even raised in the hood would outpace Betty from the trailer park, kept plugged along at school and are see the results.
William Julius talks about this in his 1996 book “When Work Disappears” and foresaw the despair of Black men that would result.
He predicted this…and here we are
Problem is, the economy is changing at warp speed.
IT and computer majors aren't even employed due to AI and other factors.
It's impossible to determine what's going to be in demand in the next few years, thanks to AI and automation.
Private schools do have to adhere to the DEI cops because they accept federal funding. Any institution that is receiving federal benefits or grants is in the scope. There's A LOT of bread out there scholarship wise that many of us don't take advantage of and because they are private they don't have to adhere to DEI cope cacs are using.
We also need to start setting up and funding our kids 529s. They aren't federal tax deductible, but they are state tax deductible. I know in GA and other states that lottery revenue funded tuition for kids with good grades in high school can also help offset the cost.
When you don't know better, it's hard to do better. But in this day and age, there's no excuse for not knowing better anymore. We have to do a better job.
100% private schools have to adhere to DEI but the fake DEI outrage wouldn't be heard nearly as much if it were the private HBCUsPrivate schools do have to adhere to the DEI cops because they accept federal funding. Any institution that is receiving federal benefits or grants is in the scope.
I’m late to the party on this thread but men in general are falling behind women in college attainment. And there’s not one answer. My issue from what I read briefly is that people are operating in extremes - I don’t think society is necessarily catering to women but it also isn’t encouraging education in young men. Mentorship is importsnt but what a lot of you are ignoring is mentorship in the schools itself. Most teachers are women and subconsciously are biased towards women. There’s a lot of literature that shows that 20 percent of the academic gap between men and women grade wise is solely attributed to gender bias and that when you blind test - young boys score similar to young girls (or closer). The other thing is that women are socialized to follow instructions and to be “responsible” whereas masculinity is defined in material terms or athletic prowess.
We need to redefine what success looks like for young men. But also need to acknowledge that perhaps, at the youngest ages, they don’t fit as easily into conventional schooling. It’s shy all these kids are getting diagnosed with ADHD all of a sudden. But I’m not an education specialist.
