OP has a great point but ruined it with the controversial thread title.

I agree. I should have said that I felt he's overrated relative to other GOATs.

I'm happy people got past the knee jerk reaction of thinking I'm crazy and many agreed with my point and saw beyond the title.

Kane was a bit before my time, so it's not nostalgia that has me ranking him in my top 10. He's just an incredibly skilled MC. DMX made a couple of good albums, but he does not have the talent to match BDK.

he wouldn't even be top 100 in this generation

:comeon:

Don't take my thread too far now. Kane is still a good emcee in my eyes. (top 25) And let's say someone from this generation rated Wayne a top 10 emcee. I would quickly point out that Wayne's simile construction and brgadgadocious style was heavily influenced by Kane.

:whoa:

Read before yall neg.

As a cat that grew up in the 80's the first time I heard Kane I thought he was Top 4 (behind KRS, LL and Rakim). But, then I heard G Rap on Symphony and his first two albums and :lupe: Kane moved to 5.

Then the 90's hit, and it was like Kane became a shell of himself. The problem I have is, no other rapper had as big a fall off from their first two albums to their third.

I mean the guy went from Raw, Set It Off, Aint no Half Stepping to this

:cracklupe:

His next four albums had about 5/6 songs COMBINED that were good. Many of his songs were fukking unlistenable. This is from a guy that was a legend people!!

I know he fathered the styles of mad emcees. Spare me the history lesson, I lived it.

But being truly objective, right now, I find it hard for Kane to make my top 15 of all time. You can peep my Top 5 below. I'd put LL, Chuck D, Cube, Scarface and a bunch of others before Kane.

I know many of yall think Kane and automatically put him in your top 5. But be real with yourself, tops 3 out of 8 of his albums were good. That's less than HALF. He was hot from 87-90. The 90's he was pretty much trash and for most of the 2000's he was silent.

That's a hot 2 albums every 25 year average. :scusthov:

ALL the greats have a better percentage than that.

So people, it's time to admit, Kane is the most overrated rapper ever. This was hard to say...but truth hurts.

Kane has two seminal classic albums. Long Live the Kane and It's a Big Daddy Thing were hip-hop landmarks.

- Long Live the Kane had all-time classics like "Raw", "Set It Off", "Ain't No Half Steppin".

- It's a Big Daddy Thing had timeless joints like "Smooth Operator", "Mortal Kombat", and "I Get the Job Done". In terms of variety of subject matter and sounds, this album created the template for the albums Bigge, Jay-Z and Nas would deliver in the 90s.

Based off of the strength of these two monumental albums, Kane's place in history is secure. Yes, he dropped some weak material later on. But he also had some pretty good material.

Taste of Chocolate was good. Not a classic, but a solid 4/5 album

Prince of Darkness sucked

Looks Like a Job For was a solid 4/5 album. "How You Get a Record Deal" and "Nuff Respect" were awesome.

Daddy's Home sucked

Veteran'z Day was a solid album. It was a low-budget album that dropped with little fanfare. Kane didn't have access to the hot producers of the day (unlike, say, Rakim did with The 18th Letter). But lyrically, Kane was sharp as ever, and the album had some pretty good songs.

HIlarious.

I just finished a weekend of listening to every Eric B & Rakim album back to back followed by every BDK.

He's right when he says there's a solid 3 albums or so where there are only 4 or 5 truly good songs combined as opposed to EB & R where there's greatness on each album.

There's no doubting Kane's lyrical ability, but there's MAJOR lulls in quality in some of his albums.

:yeshrug:

It's an unfair comparison. Rakim's albums with Eric B. contained relatively few songs where he is actually rapping. Rakim rapped on only 7 songs in Paid in Full, and onl 8 songs in Follow the Leader. Their 4 albums really consist of like 2.5 albums worth of material.

As opposed to Nas rapping on nine on Illmatic?

....
Nas came through the Illmatic and all the rapstars of the late 80's became Flabby-N-Sick super quick...That hppidity-hop flow of the 80's got swiftly transferred to Larry Holmes Gardens...

2Pac made a song Old Skool talking about people in his own age bracket...:mjlol:ged

My personal opinion is that The GOATS can only be chosen from rappers that were actively relevant and influential from mid-90s to 98...

That was the PINNACLE of hip hop music...Any body outside this bracket is not worthy...Except for Eminem, and only because he has sold the most records..

The rappers before the mid-90s are PIONEERS the rappers after 2000 are caricatures, expect for 50 Cents, and Chief Keef and them guys...They brought hip hop back to the grimmey shyt...
Spoken like someone who has never heard a Big Daddy Kane song. You are so wrong it's hysterical. Negged btw.

There is no need to listen to Big Daddy Kane....Far more better rappers came after him...

Krs 1 is the only rapper from the 80s that made timeless music in my opinion...Sound of Da Police, Black cop, 9mm and many more...

Krs One and MC Hammer are the ONLY rappers from the 80s early 90s that are worthy of GOAT status...

Yeah, where do we draw the line?

All I'm trying to say is that, as much as people complain about Illmatic not having enough songs, Rakim's first two albums had FEWER

And that's fine. But people should take that into account if they are going to compare Rakim and Kane in terms of quantity
