Research rent and house prices in this area. You have to make a lot just to live in a middle class area so it doesn't matter how much you make if you still live in middle to lower class. You should know then, that blacks in PG county, have the highest median wealth of any county that's majority black..... thus making them the county the most affluent majority black county in the US.

Whites started leaving South LA, and surrounding suburbs Like Compton,South Gate,Lynwood etc. starting in 1948....

Wealthier blacks in LA moved west into neighborhoods like Leimert Park, Windsor Hills-View Park and Baldwin Hills..... working class blacks moved into Watts.

Whites attempting to resist/suppress black gentrification is part of what led to the Watts Riots.

Williamsburg was always a mostly Rican and Jewish hood with some blacks and ethnic European groups from what I remember and it's been gentrifying since the 90's, it's been a hipster haven for over a decade not exactly anything new honestly.

Dude...I see a lot of these hipster businesses just sticking out in areas like bed stuy, bushwick, crown heights, etc like a sore thumb. In the mmidst of corner stores, black haircare places, liquor stores, West Indian food places, and check cashing centre's you have a cute little eatery that sells artifical vegan food and with all of the color on that street somehow this one lone establishment is as white as snow inside...filed with hipsters on their macbooks.

They don't hire any locals at all at these places from what I've observed. It's all hipsters and transplants like the....so there goes their contribution to the community.

White people who had newfound affluence after World War ii decided they couldn't live next to black people and headed out to the newly built suburbs where they received tax incentives to obtain housing in neighborhoods where blacks were the victims of red lining which barred them from buying houses in those same areas. In fact the highway systems in this country were built to get whites with cars into those suburban areas and away from the cities. Those cities were left to decay, crime went rampant, property values went to absolute doggy doo and then once those values were low enough you had white guys and artists and musicians crafting some life for themselves and then the neighborhoods got popular.

There was no gentrification in that case. I can't even get with this. What you're seeing today is reverse white flight. Ie the children of the white flight generation are now moving back into the cities and reclaiming them for themselves. Their parents didn't know how to live around people of color and moved...Their kids do not and have not and are around them.

Gentrification really is just class-social migration which anyone individually can be apart of regardless of their race. For some odd reason, there are quite a few people in here who believe that if the people were "white trash" (i.e the poor white and working class), that this phenomenon would not be occurring, when in fact it already has; Hell's Kitchen in Manhattan via the West Side past 10th Avenue in the W 40s is a prime example of this. When your rent cost 75% of one months pay none of that matters you still live pay check to pay check. If a one bed room cost 1700 a month and you get paid 45k annual, that isn't rich or comfortable. That is lower class.
