Are we all here completely out of touch with who is popular and relevant?

What got me thinking the other day was I made a thread about Glokknine going to jail. A bunch of replies were your typical “who the fukk is that?” booth posts.

Now the only reason I even know who Glokknine is is because he dissed another young artist that I do listen to some (Foolio) for no reason. But I noticed on YT Glokknine has a song with 35 mil views and another with 22 mil views.

Now compare that with someone I listen to a lot and is considered a gawd on the coli, Benny the Butcher. Benny’s most popular song on YT has only 4.6 mil views.

Maybe that’s just YT though.

So I compared their spotify monthly listens. Much closer but Glokknine is at 1.8 mil monthly and Benny at 1.6.

I know Benny isn’t mainstream like that but I thought he had more listens than a fukking Glokknine.

Is the booth a :flabbynsick: bubble?

I know for a fact I am. I don’t know who most of these mofos are people be talking about. Haven’t actually listened to a lil baby or young boy song other than when I tell my son to turn that shyt down.

Also to put a disclaimer out there I never listened to Benny the butcher either but I did see him in a movie and knew who he was.

I absolutely am. Just can't keep up. I probably have albums from 2010 I still haven't listened to :mjlol: I'm not even working right now, but between books, movies, tv shows, NBA games, social life etc i just don't have that much time to discover that many current artists. Last dude I found out about is Maxo Kream, and that's only because of that video with Tyler. Album is nice too :ehh:

Yes and that's OK, as you grow older you'll (hopefully) care less about what's popular and moreso what you find good and entertaining :yeshrug:
Yes. You’re echoing the sentiments of most of the board. We’re older and we don’t really really keep up with what’s hot.

That does beg the question though why are posters here often speaking as if from authority about whose “relevant” and “influencing the culture,” etc. when none of us are in tune with that?

Funny you mention the Benny comparison coz I'm willing to bet Benny will still outlast whoever the fukk Glokknine is. This new music is disposable. And I know that because my 16 year old nephew will bump some new shyt for a month and then that shyt is out of his rotation completely. Like, never to be played again.

These new kids make moments, not eras.

Well Glokknine is probably going to prison for at least a decade so we won’t know. There are younger artists who don’t get mentioned much here that already have longer and more successful careers than Benny though.

Take for example Yungeen Ace, a artist here nobody ever talks about here unless it’s related to demonic violence and fukkery. He’s been around as long as Benny and does more numbers.

Maybe but who gives a fukk? Why is it a virtue to be 'in touch' with something just because a bunch of people are? Maybe a bunch of people are into some bullshyt.

Health food junkies be 'in touch' with the cool new fast food menu items? More info, more content = more tailored to who you are and what you like. Yet you have a sect of people who are constantly looking outside themselves to see what other people are doing/listening to for no real reason. You nikkas ain't playing the stock market or anything based on any of this data.

Word.

I am completely out of touch and I am proud of that.

Popular Hip Hop has been garbage for nigh on 2 decades now

I love it when people listen to the wack shyt they caped for a couple years later like

"Such and such sounds like crap now."

Congratulations. It was ALWAYS wack you were just trying to fit in by bumping it. You fooled yourself into liking it.

I was surprised to see how little streams and views Benny has. I know he isn’t mainstream. But he’s co-signed by all the legends, got features with Ross, Wayne, Drake, etc., Hitboy production, backed by Roc Nation and given exposure by Shade 45, Lebron posts vids listening to him.

He’s been my favorite rapper for the past several years and a lot my friends rock with him…though my friends are all 40ish. :flabbynsick:

I guess it is just a huge gap in age and hip-hop listening now cause the average age in the booth is :flabbynsick: and artists who nobody has heard of here do way more numbers than most of the booth’s top 5 or top 10.

you are in an echo chamber and yelling at yourself

one rapper is named after a knife and the other a gun

amerikkka is gun country so mystery solved.

mind you those numbers were so close in comparison all it says to me is that you can be your authentic self and still reach millions

as far as the gen gap its our fault.

no 40 yr old should be listenin to new artists who dont bring anything to the table and we are enablers to a certain degree

we slap the first repetitive wack off beat violently ptsd themed song then shame the authentic/pioneers as irrelevant

if some kid is posting and NOT checking out different kinds of artists or diggin in the proverbial crates then the cycle continues

fortunately i dont dictate my life by this forum.

i.e. one example would be plays; you only counted bennys streams from his channels; what about others who uploaded?

my point is shyt is bigger than being pigeonholed

the real aint goin nowhere and the coli only is legit when 40 yr olds are sharing legitimate opinions and the kids are taking heed to history.

might not happen daily but its happening and no amount of ignorance cant stop it

Some things could also come down to the audience and their streaming preferences.

I like Benny and didn’t even know what he looked like until after maybe a year or so of listening to him. I don’t really watch video. Just Apple Music for the most part.

underrated post. REP

i still dont kno what some nggaz look like from the 90s and early 2000s :blessed:

you sir a real one
