Changed my mind. Buhloon Mindstate is their best album.
For the OG’s is there a reason why Buhloon Mindstate didn’t fair as well as their past albums? I read an interview where the group said BM didn’t sell well and thats why they called the 4th album Stakes Is High because Lyor Cohen told them of it didn’t sell they might be done
The thing about
Buhloone Mindstate, was that before it even dropped, The Source gave it 4 1/2 mics, and everyone was mad hype to cop it. I was one of the kids who bought it the first day, just because it was De La. But even though it was getting great reviews, at that time, people wanted them to stick to the sound that they had on the first two joints, where you could party to their singles and some of the album cuts. Prince Paul said they decided to change direction on this one, and the group wasn't really getting along with him at the time too. So I think the lighthearted feel of their work before this, was missing because of that. This is when they stopped being as accessible for their OG fans.
I still think they lost some direction and vision after
Stakes Is High. It wasn't the same after that. But they had already dropped 4 classics in a row, so they blessed us enough by '96. Paul actually started working on
Stakes Is High with them but then left, but once he was gone, and
after that album, they lost a little something.
Buhloone still feels very much like Paul's creation and like he was doing the driving. I still think
3 Feet High and Rising and
Stakes Is High are much better albums.
De La Soul Is Dead got a 5/5 in The Source, and I could always see why. That seemed to be the last time the group sounded like they were just having fun for the whole album.
I'm sure trying to navigate Hip Hop and where it was going from '91-'96 was tough for them. So the fact that they were able to drop 4 classics in a row, and still just stay true to their art, is amazing, when you think about how many people tried to switch up just to fit in back then.
