The thing about Buhloone Mindstate, was that before it even dropped, The Source gave it 4 1/2 mics, and everyone was mad hype to cop it. I was one of the kids who bought it the first day, just because it was De La. But even though it was getting great reviews, at that time, people wanted them to stick to the sound that they had on the first two joints, where you could party to their singles and some of the album cuts. Prince Paul said they decided to change direction on this one, and the group wasn't really getting along with him at the time too. So I think the lighthearted feel of their work before this, was missing because of that. This is when they stopped being as accessible for their OG fans.

I still think they lost some direction and vision after Stakes Is High. It wasn't the same after that. But they had already dropped 4 classics in a row, so they blessed us enough by '96. Paul actually started working on Stakes Is High with them but then left, but once he was gone, and after that album, they lost a little something. Buhloone still feels very much like Paul's creation and like he was doing the driving. I still think 3 Feet High and Rising and Stakes Is High are much better albums. De La Soul Is Dead got a 5/5 in The Source, and I could always see why. That seemed to be the last time the group sounded like they were just having fun for the whole album.

I'm sure trying to navigate Hip Hop and where it was going from '91-'96 was tough for them. So the fact that they were able to drop 4 classics in a row, and still just stay true to their art, is amazing, when you think about how many people tried to switch up just to fit in back then.

Also during the time frame of Buhloone there was friction between the Native Tounges. Pos mainly. I remember in an article in The Source he mentioned him, q-tip and baby bam from jungle Brothers had a little static that got squashed once Pos got sick and was in the hospital. He throw shots and references to Native Tongues being dead all thru out that album and made the declaration that The Tounges were reinstated on Stakes after everything was squash.

Hadn't listened to Bionix in ages since an old HD crashed and I never got around to downloading the album again, now I'm reminded all over again how mad I was when I first heard Simply Havin and how short it was. Been running through the discog daily since Friday, Stakes Is High is still the gold standard to me from the first 4 album run.

Finally giving the streaming versions a spin on Apple Music.I decided I’d start with the album I know by heart, which is De La Soul is Dead.

Right off the top, I can hear the changes: in “Oodles of O’s”: the Doug E Fresh/Slick Rick vocal sample has been changed.

Now I’m on “Pease Porridge“, and the James Brown “I Don‘t Know” vocal is changed.

It‘s fukking with my head, and making me scared of what else has been changed. :pachaha:

I’m going to have to stick to my personal copies.

As long as the feeling and spirit of the music is still there, I will play them on Spotify. At the very least it will let younger cats and people who never listened to them hear the music even if there's a few small bits missing. I'll put the originals on my phone every now and then like I've been doing for the last 10+ years but at least now I can add songs to playlists etc.

Just skimming through some songs, I think it's primarily a lot of the vocal samples that were changed/removed.

The "Bioooooo-feeeebaaackkkk" at the beginning of "En Focus" is different, same as the "Ain't no half-steppin'" in "Ego Trippin'"

If you know what those samples sound like in regards to the songs they came from, it'll probably mess with you. But for people that've never listened to De La before this, they should be A-Ok. :yeshrug:

Breh, I don't even play the remastered Ready To Die "Machine Gun Funk" disappoints me so much.

Bro, the changes to "Machine Gun Funk" are flagrant.

I can't listen to it on the streaming platforms. But this is why it's good to have the old physical media, or even the old mp3's. They throw sh*t on the platforms now, and change up the songs or take things out and it kills the whole feeling for some of them.

Have been bumping the first three albums nonstop. Might be the only person on the planet who thinks Stakes is High (and everything after) is dope but not on the level of the Paul albums :yeshrug:

On a technical level you definitely could make a case of the first three being better then Stakes is High but Stakes is high is my personal favorite because I’m a dude who’s into bangers and how it bumps especially in the car.

De la is dead and Bulhoone don’t have the bangers Stakes does there more of creative pieces

Stakes to me not only spoke on current rap but also predicted the future of rap with alot of what they were saying.

Also to me Stakes was them at their best lyrically.

The first three were more about creativeness they were concept albums it Didn’t necassarily lend itself to them showing off their entire package of MC skills
