The biases are stupid but I'm not with the whole lumping of all the cultures together thing. Nothing wrong with acknowledging not only what is the same, but also what is different between us. It doesn't have to be divisive.
I don't understand why it's different though. My dad's Nigerian, my mum's Jamaican and my girl's Bajan. Everyone mixes and matches over here lol
Im Nigerian, my girl is Jamaican....half my friends are African the other half are West Indian.... no one cares in the Uk, everyone is just seen as black.... apart from the banter which is pure jokes
I understand your experience. My mother's a second generation Ethiopian American, and my father's side is African American, but my mother is so removed from her culture that I never really grew up around my Ethiopian side. My mother was culturally African-American, and her family had a problem with her marriage to my father. She would make a few comments here and there about Ethiopian culture vs. African American culture, which showed how different they view themselves. It confused me. I've always just referred to myself as an African American but I don't fit in, and out of the few times I'd be around my Ethiopian side I could tell that they thought they were better than me. I'm tired of seeking acceptance from that side so I just ride with being African American. At the same time, Africans (West or East) really need to act right cause they need to realize that it's because of African Americans they have rights in this country. There's a disconnect between the two groups of people because the African American experience is vastly different from the West/East African experience. Most of these Africans come from mostly homogenous societies and didn't have to deal with white supremacy on the same level that my ancestors had to. So they come here and think everything's easy, without understanding the 400 years of bullshyt we done had to go through, and then try to call us lazy and join in with whitey. But they don't hear me tho.
That's the west indian mindsetI see everyone as a brotha. black, white and anything in between...just dont call me nikka tho other than that we good
All them civil wars and tribal warfare they be havin?
Accept the purported homogeneity of centuries-old subcontinental territories arbitrarily demarcated by disinterested European imperialists, brehs.
I think she means in terms of white europeans, etc. But you're right, Africa is diverse as fukk as is which causes conflicts at times.
Alot of people view the African continent as one big monolith...unaware that there are 59 different countries within it that all have their different cultures, backgrounds, demoographics, populations, GDPs, etc. I blame the lack of education about that on the largely Eurocentric Western School system that limits any sort of exposure on what the continent is all about that doesn't align with any stereotypes of it. Much of it comes from xenophobia and ethnocentrism too.
Im Ghanian and proud...my girl is Jamaican and proud.
I have no problem with African Americans. nor do my parents. Ive seen this topic come up here before and personally I never experienced it. My family doesnt give a sh!t if you live in the states what kind of dumb sh!t is that. I have noticed though that alot of AA's seem to distance themselves from there ancestory. Almost like there ashamed to be decendents from Africa. its like they rather be part of the "other" side. which is c00ning imo...but even still..I just let them c00n...I dont care enough to give a sh!t anymore
If anything, I noticed more tension between africans and west indians. alot of africans think jamaicans give us a bad name by "always" being in the news. and alot of west indians, along with AA's try to distance themselves from africa. Whats funny is Africa is a place to be proud of, we are successful people. Obama is African..and alot of other successful black people ive seen come from Africa. we work hard and get sh!t done...so why people would wanna distance themselves from us is beyond me
Can't distance yourself from something you've never known. seen, or experienced culturally. Can't be ashamed of something you can't even mentally conceive of. I am American. And like people have said, Africa is huge, what part of Africa do I go to and identify with? It's impossible because that part of our history has been blurred. Also, we aren't "African Americans", we're Black. Other than that, I got love for Africans and wish you all the best of luck. Hopefully I can visit the Motherland and experience the vast array of culture that our cousins across the pond have created for themselves.
a few years ago id get in a heated argument with you...but now im just too much p*ssy out here for me to be worried about your opinions on who you identify with. if you feel your not an african american even though your black because you come from africa and you live in america...then theres nothing I can say to change your mind. Im just thankful that not all AA's have your mind set...
its not sad,, u have these ppl from poorer countries that do all they can do move here just to have a better life while starting from the bottom, focusing on education and hopefully going to school or their kids through college while going against the grains
and then you have the blacks in america that shyt on every opportunity they have in america while bytching about racism and oppression when despite it all the opportunities are there to excel in life but is squandered away living the black mans dream of a nice car with rims while living in an apt....
I never said I was AA, that's a catchall phrase. I was responding to your apathy of Black American culture as if it's worthless and doesn't exist. Like Africa is the place to be and all other African diaspora's culture should bow to Africa
You sound incredibly dumb. EVERYONE comes from Africa. I was born in America and my family 8-9-10 generations back lived in AMERICA. Me nor any of my relatives have set foot in Africa nor were we immersed in different African nation's music, food, etc. I don't just "live" in America anymore than you just "live" in Africa. You're the type of African I can't fukk with. And nope, most Black Americans don't see themselves as Africans "living" in America. Sit a Black at a table with people from any African nation and there would be a cultural divide. You WILL respect our culture and if not, you're in the same fukkboi category as the White men. I got respect for anyone who gives it, but don't act like you're endowed with some special superiority cause YOUR ancestors shipped OUR ancestors off to do OUR OWN THING.
