A lot of 3d was ugly. It finally took the ps3 generation to where I felt 3d could wow me like some of the 2d games did. I'm talking full 3d here, not games with 3d models on top of prerendered backgrounds.
you musta been born in the 90's

when 3d first dropped it was fire, games like ridge racer, metal gear, crash bandicoot at the time looked amazing.

first 3d game i saw had to be Virtua fighter

those first 3d arcade games were something else, the minute i got a playstation with a demo disk i never looked back on 2d games. At the time they all played the same

3d took how you played games to another level. The only time its been this significant of a jump has been the jump to online gaming with ps3/xbox360. I have yet to see anything that is touching those 2 as quantum leaps

when the 16 bit era was over what was your reaction seeing the new graphics on the N64 PS1 etc....???
It was the pinnacle of gaming pretty much bruh. The industry wanted to be at that point for so long that when it finally happened? They had ideas. Virtua Racing, Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighter, Star Fox, Wave Race.
All those games shined because it was new. Today, everyone of those games would be flops. Virtua Fighter still around and only mildly popular. Wave race ain't nobody checking for, but if you want it? Kinect Sports Rivals has a wave race mode that works flawlessly and is fun. If that game came out then? We'd STILL be talking about it :francis:

nah. Born in the 80s, and started with the nes. When you had 2d games that looked like this:

It took a while for 3d to start impressing me.
This is technically 2.5d since it features 3d models running across pre-rendered backdrops

So the first game to hop into the 3D fray didn't impress you? (Super Mario 64) :usure:
Pilot wings?

PSX had jumping flash, toshinden, tekken before Mario 64. Mario 64 was cool. Great graphics, but for all of the hype it was getting at the time, when I played it, I felt it was overrated. The n64 game that impressed me was starfox 64. Waverace was impressive, especially the water. Turok 2 I thought had great graphics for its time. Unreal 1 was the 3d game that was unbelievable to me during those times.

comparing Jumping flash to anything more than a tech demo is a disgrace tho :wtf:
nikkaz would be MAD if Jumping Flash was a PS+ title, thats how bad it is.
And while you are right about Tekken/etc. I personally wouldn't count that genre (fighting)
Racing too.. Virtua Racing, FX racing were 3D titles, but as you can see neither of us are counting those :manny:

I remember I played through the first Unreal at like 5fps

with the id fps's there was a clear evolution going from Wolfenstein to Doom to Quake. with Quake being the first one with a full 3D engine. I also remember games before Wolfenstein that had that same style of dungeon crawling through mazes of hallways. there were also a lot of flight sims and such on PC that had various levels of 3D graphics

on consoles it all started to come together during the 16-bit era. first with parallax scrolling and the "mode 7" effects on the SNES. and then later with 'Super FX' games like Starfox. guess I should also mention Donkey Kong Country and it's pre-rendered 3D models

it was also seen in movies from Tron to Lawnmower Man. obviously they weren't rendered in real-time, but it was clear that was the direction games were going

all that makes it hard for me to really put my finger on when this 'transition' happened. pretty much everything I mentioned was a :gladbron: moment. I remember being amazed by the spinning triforce in the menu for A Link to the Past

I remember getting geeked off the 3D trees and pots :mjlol:

Just talking about these old games made me think about the OG Metroid for some reason. That game needs to be remade and NOT in 3D. Will there ever be a game like that again :to:

Legend of Mana and Saga Frontier 2 gotta be the most impressive 2D graphics in the 32 bit era.

That's back when Squaresoft was still worth talking about. So many quality rpgs during that era. I have more rpgs on psx than games on most of my systems.
Suikoden I & II, Tales of Destiny, Final Fantasy 7-9, Final Fantasy Tactics, Xenogears, Valkyrie Profile, Breath of Fire 3 & 4, Lunar SSS, Front Mission 3 and Vandal Hearts among many others.

I remember the console wars back then
"blast processing" vs "mode-7"
"64 colors vs 256 colors from a 65,000 color palette"

Even though I had both consoles, I was more on the side of the SNES back then, but looking back, Genesis had the better action games while SNES had better rpgs.

Because it is SQUARESOFT, not SQUARE ENIX. They started to become shyt after the ENIX merger.

Genesis had some pretty good RPG lineups too. Phantasy Star II-IV, Shining Force 1&2, Landstalker and Exile. :ehh:

Personally I was in awe at the level of interaction 3D provided. It was pretty much another dimension in the mindblown sense.

Also happy it was mostly speared by Nintendo making that full commitment. I don't think any other company could have innovated like they did.
