90s kids what was it like transitioning from 2-d to 3-d games?

Honestly 3d never impressed me as much as 2d, it really still doesn't. I was never blown away by 3d words because they always felt so limited. I think the 1st time I truly enjoyed a 3d environment was on the dreamcast.

Before that probably mario 64

Not really what the thread is about but the adjustment period from d-pad movement to dual analog movement. I think Max Payne was one of the first I tried and struggled with.

It was kind of a rough transition until Mario 64 came out, that came really crushed buildings from a design standpoint.

I remember I played through the first Unreal at like 5fps

with the id fps's there was a clear evolution going from Wolfenstein to Doom to Quake. with Quake being the first one with a full 3D engine. I also remember games before Wolfenstein that had that same style of dungeon crawling through mazes of hallways. there were also a lot of flight sims and such on PC that had various levels of 3D graphics

on consoles it all started to come together during the 16-bit era. first with parallax scrolling and the "mode 7" effects on the SNES. and then later with 'Super FX' games like Starfox. guess I should also mention Donkey Kong Country and it's pre-rendered 3D models

it was also seen in movies from Tron to Lawnmower Man. obviously they weren't rendered in real-time, but it was clear that was the direction games were going

all that makes it hard for me to really put my finger on when this 'transition' happened. pretty much everything I mentioned was a :gladbron: moment. I remember being amazed by the spinning triforce in the menu for A Link to the Past

:salute: This whole post.

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
y'all will NEVER understand that leap.. unless we go to FULL virtual reality.. we added another entire dimension during that 1 gen crossover :blessed:

imagine every game is side by side.... every game ever

next thing you know you have

mario :ohhh:

virtual fighter :takedat:

tekken :mjcry:

starfox :whoo:

wcw vs nwo :gladbron:

zelda :wow::wow::wow::wow:

mario kart :whew::whew::whew::whew::whew:

but it was when we got goldeneye :blessed::blessed::blessed::blessed::blessed:

that was the day everything changed... when we really got to use those 4 controllers at once... and the rumble packs... and clap each other up :ooh:

then playstation came and just took it to a whole nother level that hasn't been surpassed yet... 4d is the only thing that could come close

With all due respect my G:whoa:.... what you know about Sonic, Tecmo Super Bowl, FF IV, Spiderman, and a few other classics in 91?:leon:

My young G, you was still riding in car seats and putting random items around you in your mouth. But the time you could speak in proper sentences years later and use a crayon, we was off that.
I was born in 90...My first console was a Super Nintendo,my uncle set it up and played xmen all day on it :pacspit:
:damn:
Also had a Sega,with Sonic MK,Aladdin.

I didnt get a PS until the end of 97 :francis: My pops got a N64 summer of 97...only had Mario Kart and Hexxen to hold me down until Christmas :bryan:

Trust I know the struggle of leaving a console on and praying ya mom didnt turn it off when you was at school :mjcry:

I still remember playing Virtua Fighter on Sega Saturn back when Sears had that gaming station...shyt was :wow:

pretty gradual. doom was in 3d lol. i didnt get impressed until starfox64

Yeah, it wasn't like it was an overnight "WOAAAHHH, EVERYTHING CHANGED!" thing - it took years and was pretty gradual. If anything, I think the first time I saw digitized sprites (Mortal Kombat) was probably more impressive than the first time I saw polygon graphics.

I think my first "true 3D" game was Virtua Racing on Genesis - the cart was extra large and had some dedicated hardware in it to give the thing superpowers, but I'd seen similar graphics used in intro sequences before (F1GP on PC comes to mind) and I'd obviously already played it in the arcades along with Daytona and Sega Rally, so it still felt like catching up rather than breaking new ground.

Then you had stuff like Duke Nukem 3D, Doom II, Wolfenstein etc (BUILD Engine basically) which looked like they were 3D and said they were 3D, but weren't really 3D (just very clever at displaying sprites to make it look like they were)... I guess the first proper WOOOAAAHH was playing Quake Shareware on PC... fukker took about 5 days to download on a 28.8k modem, but it was worth it for the little bit of poo that came out the first time I came across a Shambler.:damn:

You just accept progress as a kid... I was born with an Atari 2600 and a BBC-B in the house, but got a Game Gear and a Genesis for consecutive Christmases when I was about 9 or 10 which felt like a huge leap. PSX came out when I was 12 and I always remember kind of taking it all in my stride. Like "yeah, this is what I'd expect the next step to be... and it's still not really as good as the arcades". The PS2/Xbox generation and the realisation that the arcades no longer meant shyt was a big change.:whoo:

I miss playing in the arcade though, brehs. Hogging the MK machine all afternoon until some stranger came along that could knock you off was every Saturday shyt... then getting sonned with an 80 hit combo on Killer Instinct.:leon:

Basically; "What was it like playing FF7, Mario 64, and Ocarina of Time"

It was magical, to say the least. Also very polarizing. Not many games delivered and those that did really only came from a few poultry companies (Square, Eidos, Capcom, etc). While giants now, you didn't think they would last (and many almost didn't), we were at both the Golden and Dying age of video games. It wasn't a medium many people were part of, after the whole Mortal Kombat 2 fracas, we all thought it was doom and gloom.

To be far more specific, I remember the day, what I ate, and where I played FF7 for the first time. It came with a smell, like a Happy Birthday on a Thursday, it was unforgettable.
