I'm close to having my first visualization project completed. Trying to knock it out today for a follow up meeting on Wednesday. LOL I'm also pumped but watch this woman absolutely hate it. People get used to spreadsheets so new technology can be hard to adopt, but the qlik application has so much more functionality.

@MisterMajesty Good Luck on the interview today! You got this

Happy Monday and last day of January, all!

Blows the mind :russ:. I admit I'm an a$$hole because I didn't follow the installation instructions line by line. However, once I did all that and the included config was still not right? Man... 2+ weeks of troubleshooting. I made sure that shyt was committed and pushed as soon as I got even a hint of success.

Some advice my mentor gave me this weekend concerning career development

-Use Fridays as a "career day". Aim to have some sort of informational interview, coffee chat, job q&a etc every single Friday. It'll help keep you focused while in your current role, check against complacency and keep your name circling

-Always test the market every 12-15 months. Not necessarily interviewing for a job, but seeing where you rank / what opportunities are there.

-Aim to attend 1-2 industry conferences a quarter. Focus on in-person where you can as those hold the most value.

-When you land a role, find the role that ideally you'd like to get promoted to and start working on getting the skills / experience you need now.

This is absolute key good paying jobs are through networking not through applying on the career portal. Anyone who is tech in a big city checkout if reddit has meetups in your city they are very hit and miss and the people can be a bit :francis: but 99% of people are in the tech industry. I usually go if i don't have any plans at all and want to have a quick drink and get out the house most people are between 21-35

How was the process?

Also, is it okay to post my portfolio in here? (UX Designer, just want some feedback from people who will keep it real with me)
Go ahead and post your portfolio, if it doesn't expose personal info.

The interview process was pretty easy.

A recruiter with one of those agencies emailed me about the job. It wasn't the full description, just a couple of bullet points. 5 minutes after I get email, she calls asking if I'm interested. I wasn't too sure about it, but she offered to send the full listing for it.

She had me send her my resume. But to keep it to 1-page, I have a few of my previous jobs listed without my responsibilities under them. She wants me to add them back in and doesn't care how long my resume is. I do it and send it to her. She redoes it in Word. And recruiter girl also has me send her a few bullet points highlighting why I'd be good for the job she sent me.

First interview: Zoom call with the head of operations (I think) and the chief of staff. The operations guy had some technical questions, but it was more like, "What tool would you use to do such and such?" instead of how to troubleshoot style questions. After the call, I really wanted the job.

Throughout the whole process, this recruiter is emailing and texting me status updates. Like one time, she texted me after 10 pm.

Written assignment: The instructions said that the company’s mission is almost impossible, why do I want to join and attempt to disrupt the industry

The 2nd question asked what super powers would be good to have to in the role. But they meant what skills, not super powers.

My written answers seemed kind of sappy, so I was concerned if I was going to get a second interview.

Second interview: Zoom call with the head of product and the MSP contractor. None of the questions they asked were very technical. It was more of a conversation than an interview.

The recruiter kept me in the loop with updates. A few days later told me I got the job. Wrote her a recommendation on LinkedIn.

I messed up because they're giving me more money than I asked for. I had given the recruiter a salary number. I think it's because she caught me off guard with the random phone call.

Last week I focused on trying to rid myself of the 9-5 mentality. One day it was supposed to snow, told my supervisor I wanted to run some errands, he replies "good luck". Turned my slack notifications off for two hours and set my status to away. So much freedom in those two hours because I didn't have to check in with anyone. Spent at least 5 hours Friday working on a project, so definitely made up for the time. I didn't have any meetings after 11am so met a friend for lunch today. Not feeling the need to sneak around is good. May take some time, but I'm settling into it.

Popped up on Indeed (as I do from time to time) and see the job posting for a role I turned down 6 months ago. Actually, its the job for who was gonna be my manager. :ohhh:

Job is in NYC so they are now showing the salary range, and the max is less than what I'm currently making at the job I ended up accepting. :birdman:

That’s why i feel that posting the salary is bullshyt. It’s never going to reflect what people are actually being paid.

My boss told me about a management position opening up internally and I expressed interest. I think I'd be good, but I still like problem solving as a IC but I realize that there is a cap there and if I can advance in my career having been there over four years and get more experience why not? Plus I have good communication skills.

Has anyone done the IC to Management transition before?
