Can someone elaborate on the path of cybersecurity? Possible looking at career change. I've read that security is basically the easiest path in IT to get to advanced levels. Does one start with the basics? Can someone point out a path, certs wise?

It's definitely the easiest to move up the ranks but who knows for how much longer. But this only due to the ignorance of IT Management. Most of whom are scared to death of getting breached so they throw money at anyone who can spell cybersecurity.

I got an 8K raise one year just because a Senior Security Analyst quit and management feared everyone else in Security might do the same. If I wasn't so lazy I could be making 6 figures by now job hopping.

I started out doing helpdesk then desktop support for 4 years with zero chance for advancement. There is no shortage of applicants for those type of jobs so companies treat people in those positions like trash. But all it takes is one Security breach or scare for Companies to overpay for cybersecurity talent. The easiest way to get paid in Security is to work for a company that just got breached and is facing massive fines and lawsuits. They'll pay almost any amount to secure things properly and reassure investors.

Hmm yeah I just keep researching and the consensus is that security is the path of least resistance in terms of advancement in IT.

I was thinking of going A+, then network+/security+ then deciding where to go from there. But I read people saying just go for the CCNA.

Even though I make decent money, 6 figures, especially bottom 6 figures ain't shyt, in the grand scheme of things. I feel in order to feel free or live like the thecoli's definition of "6 figure baller", I need to be pulling in over 350k annually at minimum and be totally debt free.

Oh, you don't already :sas2:?

I was talking with my mom the other night and told her pretty much the same thing. For me it's not about being a baller, but having that "real" financial success that shows you've really made it.

Yeah bro, this shyt is a facade. I don't care about being a baller either but I'm just not comfortable with being comfortable right now. For some people that's fine but I know I could be doing better and will as time goes on

You can get the Security+ and CEH but both are worthless when it comes to making more money. But if your just starting out they can't hurt and their both easy at least when I took them.

The only Security certs with a definite ROI are CISSP or SANS certs. But I wouldn't take either until after getting 4 or 5 years worth of experience.

If you live in a market with a shortage of IT people it will be much easier to find a security job. Places close to huge military bases tend to have lots of openings due to the Feds hiring up all the security people.
