For those in a 'comfortable' job, would you spend out of pocket for your Bachelor's degree? My company offers 10K tuition reimbursement a year but it's going to take me 5-6 more years at this rate to finish with them paying it all. I feel like the lack of a Bachelor's degree would hinder me with external roles/companies I would apply to. I'm also not necessarily in a huge rush to move at this point but don't want to be stagnant at my age either. :patrice:

Depends on what you exactly do
I hate to use family as an example again.
But my cousin is like the definition of the American dream.

Highschool drop out
Military veteran
No degree
It certifications
Working for accenture from home making 6 figures.

He swears up & down you don't need a degree unless you are trying to go into roles where you are responsible for an entire team. His ex manager didn't know a thing about programming but she knew how to manage and make sure projects were finished on time for their customers. She did have her MBA though.

If anything getting a degree would net you more money in the long run and get you in the positions where you don't even have to touch the computers anymore.

If the positions you want require it, do it. If they don't, then slow boogie your way to that degree.

As for being stagnant; that depends on what you do in your current role. i.e., a cloud engineer would not have to worry about that. A programmer that only works on legacy code would.:yeshrug:

I am in a similar position actually but in a management position making 6 figures with certs and no degree. I've 'proven' myself into positions with current employers but it doesn't always translate in resume form with other employers. Most companies want a finance/business background for the role I have.

yeah i'm kinda there now. I make over a 100k a year/good benefits/pension but I'm looking to do something else. I'm at a point where I can afford to take a financial hit in the beginning for a while (no debt, own house, etc). I've always been interested in computers/tech and read that IT careers are obviously in demand.

Honestly unless a company is paying for it I'd just go get a 200 dollar bs degree you can buy online just so you can put the name on your resume and keep it moving. Most companies don't care about the degree, just that it justifies the position and salary if they see one period.

Books are good starting place. There's videos online, local classes you can sign up for.

Just getting started is most important step. Took me a year before I even opened the A+ book.

All my cousin told me was the A+ was just the basic foundation cert for IT but the security+ carries more clout and I could really go places with it.
:yeshrug: I mean he's a linux system administrator for Accenture so I take his word as gospel

This is news to me too. If we can handle the security+ we should be able to just figure out the A+ material on the side.

I don't got time to waste i may as well start big so i can be making paper like the dudes in the IT thread are.

can you ask your cousin about how much longer after getting a job with the security+ can you start taking the cert for the CISSP? and get back if u can please.

all this time i thought we had to take the A+ first. smh this is crazy

Nah you can skip A+ if you have basic computer knowledge.

Edit. Cissp has pre requisites it seems. Can't just apply
