I started in IT at 27. Get focused and get on your grind.

32. Graduated college in 08 worked a couple very low paying jobs, got depressed for a bit. Then I helped an African breh out by letting him stay with me in my tiny apt till since he just got to town and knew no one. He kicked knowledge about IT and I got an A+ for dummies book , got the cert and started desktop support 3 months later.

IT is a hustlers dream. Learn quick, pick up skills, exaggerate your resume and you can eat well. Always question more experienced brehs as much as you can.

Got any advice for the A+? I take the 901 exam on Wednesday.

I'll probably wait until next year to look for a higher paying job. I'm making 38/hr now but making more money could lead to bigger headaches at a new company. There are a ton of poorly run Companies out there that aren't worth dealing with no matter the salary.

From what I remember they ask alot of questions about folder name differences between different OS's.

\users\*username*\folders (documents, music) for windows 7 compared to documents and settings \*username*\my documents\my music for xp.

Look around on system properties and control panel. They ask questions about that. Rest is just expected material from book

I took it in end of 2011. I have no idea what else they added on there from win 8 or 10

I was wary about leaving management and getting into IT but stories like this motivate me :salute:

Oh ok didn't know your story.

Damn you aren't lying about the poorly run companies. Every Indian IT company is run shytty.

I'm not rushing just kinda tripped into a nice gig. I had lost ground to make up for anyway.

What field are you in?

Thanks man. Any advice on getting a desktop support or help desk job? Where I'm located I may have to move because I don't see a lot of those jobs here. Most are contract.

Contract is best when you first start out. Easy to get and last 6 months usually. I'd go for desktop support level 1 or 2. Pretty basic but higher then help desk.

For desktop they usually want basic printer support. Hardware replacements. And basic software support (applying patches, reinstalling corrupt programs, installing licensed software, pushing apps thru push tools)

29 :francis:

Thinking about going for the A+ then getting a bachelors in computer information systems...that would have me just getting into the field at 32 :francis:
My degree is in economics. Don't waste time on degrees, they value technical skills and experience. I rarely get asked about my degree.

Breh who put me on had business degree and was senior database programmer making 120k a year. He was in IT for 5 years at the time. His break room had a PS3 and ping pong table
:takedat:
I was working on and off making 14/hr at the time so I went all in when he explained things to me

Can you maintain our network? Can you code java well? Skilled enough to be a server admin?

That's what they care about

Trust me when I say this, once you get past the initial help desk/deskside world of IT, a degree definitely comes in handy and is often a requirement.

Maybe it's cuz I stick to contract roles. Idk. Or maybe they see it on my resume and don't say anything.

I know I never get asked about IT related degrees tho
