It's been years. I see them as more or less equal experiences but like I said I prefer CT's characters so I think it has an edge.

edit: also I only finished the very first Earthbound and only got midway through the sequels so those could potentially be better

Not really. Consensus top 5 JRPGs and the only arguments for anything else are WRPGs that are more or less niche. The only other games that really compete IMO are FF7, Skyrim/Fallout and probably something else that I'm forgetting.

edit: Dragon Quest VIII is also in that discussion
The very first Earthbound...?

You are aware that there is only one Earthbound, right? Mother 2 is Earthbound. :lupe:

Have you played any SMTs, Star Oceans, Shadow Hearts? Or you just going by sales or something? FF7 might not even be a top 3 FF with 6, 10 and tactics. Fallout? Lost Odyssey is better

Yeah actually, I've played most of the Star Ocean series, one Shadow Hearts game and Devil Survivor/Persona 3 (but not 4 which is the shyt I've heard in this topic). When I say consensus I'm going by the generic public opinion + mine. You can feel free to disagree but most people who've played them put those 2 way up with the GOAT RPGs they've played even if they aren't their absolute favorite.

FF7 is better than 10, and I would say a little better than tactics (I already said 6 was the best FF). Tactics suffers from a gameplay system that, while fun and customizable, ended up being repetitive and abusable. The story isn't anything to write home about either.

I felt like Lost Odyssey was run-of-the-mill as far as what it had to offer. It benefitted from being one of the few traditional RPGs that are on a next-gen platform, but overall it was only an above-average RPG. In my opinion.

I know there's a Mother 3 that has Lucas, so I assumed that was Earthbound 2.

FF7's story relative to the time it came out was :ohlawd: and that's undeniable. Wasn't no RPG that did it bigger and better at that time, it was like JRPGs meet Hollywood.

Tactics story was very meh. You're a knight, princess is kidnapped (multiple times even :beli:), go save her. You have a nemesis (which you need auto-potion to fight or you get stuck :snoop:), and then you fight the final boss. It wasn't anything groundbreaking. I actually prefer Disgaea, even story-wise, because it's funny. That deserves a mention.

On the other hand Tactics at it's time did introduce a whole new style of play to the FF series, which it gets it's credit. It's a very good game and it's up there, but the system hadn't developed yet to the point where it actually worked though. The newer FFTs on handhelds, while not as good, are ideally how the gameplay system should have worked in FFT.

The Materia system of FF7 was an evolution of the Esper system in FF6 which added a lot more depth to the leveling system, it was almost to the point where if you and some peers played the game, no two characters are exactly alike statistically because the Materia system gave you so many options. It wouldn't be until FF9 that the system would be mastered, however.

But like I said feel free to disagree brehs this is all opinions. :obama:

Well, coming from someone who played FF7 for the first time fairly recently(past 5 yrs or so), it IS standard stuff nowadays.

Any of my PC brehs trying to get lost in Divinity Original Sin with me? Just copped but haven't started. Seeing if anyone wants to make a gaming commitment :to:

Forcing myself through Duke Nukem Forever. Gameplay isn't terrible at least but it's way too corny.

Duke Nukem Forever is not a bad game on, especially on PC. If you go into the game without trying to shyt on it at every opportunity you'll realize that the game is solid.
