I don't know if the music industry NEEDS tiktok but they have been pushing their artists to post on there and I think tiktok was pivotle in the career of numerous musicians sicne they built a fanbase there. the music industry recently had a contract dispute with tiktok regarding licensing but i don't know who capitulated in the negotiations.
The entire entertainment/music/news industry now relies on TikTok which is beholden to the PRC... Can you speak to whether you think this is a good thing.

healthy is a broad topic but theres no doubt people use the site like any other social media site to find some form of community which tends to be helpful unless said community engages in self-destructive behavior or malicious acts.

I don't think that there are many papers that show social media leading to healthy outcomes except for isolated gay pre-teens seeking out representation?

he's an adult, why do you think you should be able to tell him and other adults what websites they can access?
The same way governments can tell Americans to wear seatbelts: public safety is a governmental duty even if the population are too indifferent to look out for their own interests. See also: mandatory vaccinations

if tiktok gets banned and another site takes it's place, theres nothing stopping bad actors from simply downloading the content from a platform and transcribing it to build a dossier on an individual.
This seems half-hearted as a response.
I know you use LLMs, you can run your local one and ask what fallacies are present in this sentence. I got:
  1. False Dilemma/Perfect Solution Fallacy
  2. Nirvana Fallacy
  3. Red Herring

I think that the frustrating part is that you know more about privacy/open-source than most on this board, but in an effort to spite US corporations, you are recommending the public use an app that has all the same risks as Google/Meta/Apple but also national security concerns. I would personally dance on the grave of Social Media corporations if they were gutted and disbanded, but I still wouldn't in good faith advocate for TikTok/RedNote as alternatives. It seems like you are trying to cut your nose to spite your face.

is it good for it to be beholden to Spotify and Apple Music? I think the music industry is fukked up versus blaming any particular platform.

Its been fukked up since it started.

totally agree, but why single out one when it’s all?

what national security concerns are associated with TikTok? i ask because Joe Biden started a TikTok account After he banned it in government devices.

Do you all have state secrets on your phones? I need to know.

I would prefer that they busted things up via anti-trust. With that said, you are confining things to music. I am saying that for many Americans, TikTok is their source for music/shopping/culture/news/politics/etc. They are the filter that many Americans are using to understand the world around them.

Because TikTok has the exact same negative traits of American social media companies AND it is owned by a foreign government that we are at odds with.

I don't think either of us think that Joe Biden is actually posting TikToks, let alone TikToks from his presidential phone

Re: National Security and social media... There's clear evidence that Russia and China (AND American governments) use bot farms as influence campaigns on social media. Here an article on some of the times the PRC were caught in recent times, which is clear evidence of a national security risk:

Here are some questions I'm curious to hear your response on:
  1. Do you genuinely think that China are creating bot farms on Instagram/Facebook/Twitter but not TikTok?
  2. Given that China already runs bot farms and influence campaigns, why do you think they wouldn't use the most influential platform in the US that they happen to own?
  3. Do you think that Americans would recognize if they were being fed points that made them more amenable to the Chinese perpsective? If so, why?

TikTok may go against US propaganda , it's a national security concern! Too much non propaganda information!

The Justice Department had raised two key issues in defending the law: that the Chinese government could exert control over what content users see in order to influence public opinion, and that it could collect sensitive data on millions of American users.

In the ruling, the court acknowledged that the national security rationale affected its analysis of whether there was a free speech violation under the Constitution’s First Amendment, with the justices focusing on the data collection issue.

The court concluded that the reasons for enacting the law are “decidedly content agnostic,” meaning they have nothing to do with restricting certain speech.

So basically everything we've Been telling you guys.

No dissent either.

Is there a letter writing campaign to Trump to save tiktok? Should we just rely on his greed and narcissism?
