Why isn't Big K.R.I.T. mentioned with Kendrick, Cole, and Drake of this era?

The big three was largely about media attention, sales, and success. Those three surpassed their peers by a pretty wide margin. Even guys like Wale and ASAP who had pretty noteworthy success don't measure up when you consider the wild numbers Drake/Cole/Kendrick have put up, not to mention having multiple noteworthy albums.

KRIT also feel into a trap that a lot of guys fell into at the time: signing the wrong deal with the wrong label at the wrong time. A lot of us remember the Def Jam signing, followed by nonstop sample clearance issues and an inability to write a decent single. This was also around the time when KRIT started the realize his shyt was not bumping in the whip like a lot of other southern shyt at the time. He adjusted in that regard but never really improved as a songwriter IMO. Bad hooks, super super repetitive ("my sub, my sub, my sub..."). And I think his projects started to bleed together at one point. Waking up in the morning, hop in the car, drama with the baby mama, run into trouble, laid back personal track, triumphant banger, get home....that basically describes a lot of his projects lmao. I fukked with it for awhile but at some point it got stale.

The South Failed Krit and I’m including myself. I can run a random shuffle on Krit‘s music and I end up liking more songs than I hate. Maybe he gets mumble rap out of here if he was a star, who knows. :yeshrug:

His debut was a fumble.

mixtapes were very good ..album didn’t live up.

kendrick and drake shyt was undeniable

sean,wale and wiz had HITS

cole was shaky but he had a lane to himself and had lights please

curren$y like Cole had a lane to himself, mastered it and just did him

Tyler was that weird nikka but kept showing flashes that he was going to be a star and eventually just took off..he also had a lane and a dedicated fan base

Krit just didn’t have it….none of it

and I was a krit fan
Tyler had a nice crew and co signs

Tyler had a nice crew and co signs

nah nobody was fukkin with Tyler as far as co-signs..he couldn’t even get on blogs and ppl hated on anything OFWGKTA in real time

b*stard was the first time ppl begrudgingly acknowledged his existence…and then pp, who lie and say Mellowhype or EARL was the real stars

it wasn’t until Yonkers happened that people had no choice but to take him seriously

if having a hit solidifies you as an artist, then you just a casual ass fan who opinion on hip hop is invalidated.
the lamestream media won’t feel KRIT music because he’s not rhyming about bullshyt and he actually has substance in his music. it has nothing to do with where he’s from.
and plus he found his lane and that’s alright.

Why do y'all immediately jump to the "casual fan/ no valid opinion" when people give you a legitimate reason why he's not mentioned with the most popular rappers.

:yeshrug:I know it sounds messed up but I think it’s because. He rolled with his country/southern roots too hard(pause). Bruh is simply too damn country for the masses lol. That shyt isn’t marketable today or when he was popping. His mixtape catalog is dope tho and he’s a better producer than Cole. He also held his own with his peers. But having no marketability combined with def jam fukking him over. You can see why he isn’t mentioned anymore. The best thing for him to do is to go on the Gibbs and Spitta route. And just drop dope music for his core base.

I respect that K.R.I.T is unapologetically southern but also see where that does him in on a mainstream level. Pimp C was also that…but he was such a big personality and did it in a very lively, exciting way. K.R.I.T. has understated personality and the way he leans into his southern roots is in very “1800s slave/rebel flag/grandma’s porch” kind of way which simply is not marketable at all.

I always felt like the best thing K.R.I.T. could have done after the Def Jam fumble was expand his profile as a producer in terms of sound/range of artists he collaborates with and broaden his fan base. For the most part, he’s played it relatively safe and outside of Smoke DZA & Wiz Khalifa mostly on works with folks from Atlanta & Houston.
