Why hasn't a shooting guard ever been drafted 1st overall in the NBA?

Iverson and payton are two different types of players as well. A point guard that can score like payton is a lot different than what iverson brought to the table.

Hell Stockton scored 15 over his career compared to 16 for payton

During Paytons best scoring years the Sonics were a meh team

:what: Allen Iverson came into the league as a PG, breh. 100% fact. There is no debating this.

out of the 5 positions, shooting guard has historically been the least regarded.

Its only been since MJ that people started to take preeminence.

This. Also timing is an issue as well. Mike just happened to come out the same year you had Dream and Bowie in the draft. Kobe came out of HS when HS players were still an unproven commodity. If Kobe goes to college and stays for at least two years he is likely the top pick in 98 (hopefully the Clippers wouldn't have been that dumb) or 99 or 2000. Now that I think about it most top SGs are guys who exceeded pre-draft expectations (MJ, Kobe, Wade, Dumars).

Your arguing semantics . He was considered a pg in college and when he got drafted. There are different types of pg look at westbroOk and rose . He wasn't the pg in a Steve Nash mold so what . Didn't they bring in snow to run the pg and shifted ai

And it seems like a sg has the least upside unless they turn into a elite scorer . Rebounding defense passing are skills that translate more than just scoring

yup, this is right

if you do a top 5 2guard list, all but maybe Jerry West would be players post Jordan.

All I've been saying all thread....people want to have players wrapped up into nice little categories because its fun to have the arguments of who is the best player at PG or SG when the game is not structured that way....thats what ive been saying all thread....why cant people comprehend this....PG SG whatver its the role this player fits into or the system that the teams molds to fit their best players strengths.

Remember the thread about Jordan putting up crazy numbers when he played the point but he is considered a SG, not as simple as most like to make it out to be.

What exactly are you trying to say? :what:

Please explain that first sentence.what exactly did AI bring to the table that was so different then what Payton could do?

And what was the point of saying Payton average is only 1 point higher then Stocktons(you are wrong by the way,Stocks career average is 13)

I hope you not trying to imply glove was more of a pass first PG

Payton averaged over 20 eight times and 19 another 3 times,Stockton never averaged over 17

"during Paytons best scoring years the Sonics were a meh team" and? What's your point?

Is it his fault there was no Kemp,Schremph,McMillian,Perkins,Wingate,Hawkins etc around when he was in his prime?

I'm mean what was the point of you even saying that?

Just looked at the history of 1st overall picks and I see every position but 2 guard go 1st overall. 2 of the goats played the position.

You mean 4 of the GOATS. Do not leave out West and Wade.

I'm pretty sure the answer will go down as a PG, even though we all know he's a ball handling wing, or a combo guy.

He was drafted as a PG and played it for chunks of his career.
