He's very corny. I'll take the likes of Sam Smith and Hozier over him all day, everyday.

:heh: Let me stop you right there. Don't nobody need to be conditioned to think Derulo is corny. That level of analysis for this artist isn't even necessary
His "sound" (which is overall pleasant and non threatening) is deemed corny to black people. We have been conditioned this way. A poster named @Insensitive in another thread JUST told me its lame for black people to listen to Bruno Mars. See? We've been engineered for 400+ years to reject anything "positive" sounding. Thats why we are so drawn to the dark, demonic sounding trap sound.

:upsetfavre:You realize Motown sound and Doo Wop which were ultra popular with blacks and created by black people were the epitome of pleasant and non threatening?

And where's that sound at today being made by blacks? Yall gon realize one day that black music was and continues to be INTENTIONALLY MANIPULATED. Most black music today widely available is dark, aggressive and promotes a destructive lifestyle to its listeners. @IllmaticDelta

I dont think Derulo is "corny" at all. Its just that we've been conditioned to correlate dark, aggressive sounding beats and lyrics with black music. Thats why R&B even sounds "dark" these days with the trap sound. This is corny to black people because its upbeat and pleasant:

Nope. I can't co-sign this. What little I've heard of Jason Derulo's music doesn't even sound like potential R&B/Pop crossover hits, they just sound like straight-up Pop records.

Look at the producers he works with!! At least dudes like Justin Timberlake & Robin Thicke actually work with R&B producers.

The sound of music changes with the the times. This is modern black R&B rooted music being made right now

You should say alot of the black music you hear in the top 40 sounds like that but plenty of black music being made that's also easily accessible (like the example above) that doesn't fit that description. For something more mainstream did you forget this song already?

Their people intentionally go after the audience their music caters to.

Why do you think you don't see those dudes doing interviews on black radio either? There's no need because the demo ain't important to them.

Derulo is r&B, just real cheesy. He's not that different from Chris Brown or modern Usher.

Thicke and Justin are more "soulful" than Derulo and so are Sam Smith and Hozier.

I dont understand what u are saying. My entire point is that J.D music doesnt sound traditionally "black" hence the reason he's shunned by the black cmmunity. J.D is 10X more "soulfull" a singer than Timberlake and Sam smith. Those 2 simply have "black" soundscapes that they sing over. J.D isn't corny, its the ambience of his music thats "corny" to black people

No he's not.

If you can't sing good it doesn't matter what kind of production you're singing over

Dude is flat out corny musically/vocally. Same reason why Duffy couldn't hold a candle to Winehouse and Adele.
