I think another piece to the puzzle is us not having this generation's Spike. A guy who's gonna keep Black actors working in quality films building up their resume.

Yep because without Spike, Denzel would not be Denzel...his role in both Mo Betta Blues and Malcolm X exposed him as one of the best actors ever...Spike gave him that resume early...

As far as black directors, now, that is something that needs to be discussed thoroughly...I thought it would Antoine Fuqua, but his movies have degenerated into violent, horribly written flicks; The Hughes Brothers don't work together anymore and don't do black cinema either, and John Singleton is corrupted by white hollywood at this point; what other young black directors do we have?

The guy that did Fruitvale Station may be our best bet right there...dude is extremely talented and he could become that next black director that brings quality black cinema back to hollywood

kind of hard to replicate his stature with the new/happy negro attitude in vogue.

denzel, wesley, sam jackson, and big willie were molded in a different era.

props always to denzel and dave chappelle for resisting the ghey agenda chit on film.

no love for steve mcqueen? :sas2:

Yea, McQueen is one of the best working directors now, but he does not do black cinema...his first 2 films were Eurocentric films (they were great films), but he does different themes and times...he does not specialize in black film or black casts like the ones I mentioned

lol @ "Hollywood struggles to launch next black stars"

I wasnt aware they were trying to launch the careers of any new black stars

now if you said they were struggling to launch the careers of the next white stars then I would agree because they have been trying and these new white boys keep flopping

other than Idris, when has any new black actors even got a shot to become a star?

Michael B Jordan been getting more burn than all them whites boys who they've been shoving down our throats

all it takes is one visionary to change the game, black filmmakers need to step up their craft and creativity a well as discover new talent

let's look at it from a structural and industry standpoint. How will audiences respond to black creativity? Remember, the film industry is a capitalist industry deadset on profit and surplus value, so will the predominantly white audiences flock to see black cinema like they flock to see superhero movies, transformer movies, etc.? That is the element that needs to be discussed: black filmmakers are not gaining financing from producers because their films are not "attractive" to the white fanbase, so they co-opt and make the same whitewashed films that white directors make (except for a few).

We can pool our money together with the black elites and finance films, but when its all said and done, the political economy we live in is the ultimate determinant in how black film can expand; We saw successes in the 1990s with it, but financing went down so black film production went down...making movies is very expensive and these greedy ass producers are not going to give money to a great story (like the DC Sniper story that came out last year, Blue Caprice) if they feel that the story and characters are not "attractive" to their white profit toilets...just being real here.

Independent cinema is DEFINITELY a solution as Ryan Coogler showed with Fruitvale Station, which launched Michale B. Jordan into stardom...but we need more like Coogler who want to tell black stories and aren't afriad to go the independent route; I say fukk the corporations and big budget studios and start a grassroots black film movement that is not singular or one dimensional; it extends beyond multiple genres and happens in such a massive way that it shock and awes the film industry. We will create our own industry where the stories of blacks are written, directed, and starring blacks...once the independent grassroots wave takes shape and starts netting significant profits, the hollywood producers will start hurting, which is what we need.

In short, we need to make black cinema like a black social movement, from the ground up...screen them everywhere we can, use student groups and community organization to propagandize black film over the hollywood budgets...use cable access channels and shows; social media advertising, etc. But it has to happen en masse. That's the only way: Agency. I believe we can do it.

The black problems every single one of these black movie are about civil rights, in some shape of form, it's like every black film has to be a civils right films or biopic about a civil rights person

people are fascinated with black people, w should use it to our advantage, the problem is a lot of brehs out here losing they swag, black people are losing their identity in america

a movie with all black cast can appeal to worldwide audience if its good and interesting, nikkaz got make something great, we don't get the luxury of being mediocre

if Will Smith would have been in the Matrix, that would be a movie serious with an majority black cast, that isn't a quote on quote black movie

Coming to America was not a black movie, the comedy isn't even black style comedy, its just a black cast, and you can tell it was written by a white person

so they will do it because it is profitable

steve mcqueen did that 12 years a slave, shyt don't even have a plot, it's not a movie, the book gave insight to a man's horrific experience, but its not a movie

he could've made a movie about Fredrick Douglas, whos auto biograhy was much more interesting and his story is far greater

we don't even need the white audience, what need is production, skills pay bills, gotta raise the bar
