I would agree with Muslim Africans like Malians but anything before that then you're going to have a tough time convincing. At least with Mali's case there is actual records saying Mansa Musa's uncle traveled across the Atlantic.

Mali's naval technology was geared towards river trade. They had no incentive to develop the caravels you'd find on the Swahili coast. Most of their trading partners were reached easily by land.
