Because by putting a little more attention into the relationships, it would emphasize everything you bolded in Marty's post. The movie never really shows exactly how far he pushes everyone away because we barely see them. We don't know how his relationship with the rest of his family was, so when he shyts on everyone during dinner, we have no idea how much of that argument stems from what he's been going through. @StraxStrax and me both obviously like the movie, but we both also realize that it could've been even better if the relationships were more expanded upon.
:ehh:fair enough breh

Matter of fact, you saying you don't give a fukk about his "gf" says it all, because obviously in the end Andrew still does, hence why he calls her. But the movie does nothing to show us that maybe he really gave up something great with her. In a better movie, we would've been :lupe: at him deciding to dump that girl, instead it's sorta :manny:.

this. that's why i don't know why theyre complaining about other relationships in this thread.. idgaf about his "gf".. he made it clear that he's focused to on drumming and drumming only to her.

and he even shyt on everyone else at the dinner table

Right. The fact that his girl is barely a part of it is the point. It's him thinking that's what he wants and as much time we get with her is as about as much as he's invested. When he realizes what he gave up I didn't take it as a "damn she was the one" as much as it's "Damn, I really don't have any friends"

he only called her because he was not in that driven mode again...he didnt have to fight to earn anything and his mindset was back to what it was in the beginning of the movie.

At the moment he embraced his dad...he snapped back to that driven mode....

Fletcher embarassing him was necessary to show his potential

i do agree it was a bit rushed in that..they went on a pizza date..and then like 10 minutes later he's breaking up with her.

so i'll concede that.

I"m gonna stan for this flick though and can't wait for chazelle's next one :umad:

That's where I mentioned the film isn't always clear on the amount of time that passes. Sometimes it says it, other times it doesn't but the impact wasn't lost on me

I partly agree but I think you also misunderstand my point. I get what the movie is trying to do with that, but if the relationship was shown to be actually (somewhat) meaningful, it would've meant a lot more that he'd break it up. Like both you pretty much point out, him dumping his girl shows he might not be fully invested, or driven, but if he's not fully invested in it, then that isn't much of a sacrifice to make and I feel they missed a huge opportunity by not trying to invest you more into his girlfriend, or his family, so that the impact of him pushing them to the side would be far bigger and the sacrifice actually meant something.

I can see that. It feels heavier if you show the progress of their relationship or at least show them having some intimate moments

Yeah, I can see why people don't think it matters that much but I feel the movie is a bit too limited by only focusing on Andrew, and Andrew alone, and not showing how it affects those around him.

But anyway, what about that solo, right brehs? :whew:

I think it's a credit to the acting that it didn't feel limited to me. Like her reactions and his reactions along with Paul Raiser's reactions let me know all I needed to know:whoknows:

That plays into the inner time problem that you and me had and maybe @TheGodling . If it was clear how much time had passed between the date, text and break-up it would've hit me harder but it felt like a 2 month (max) relationship visually but the things she says to him are something that a girl would say after 12 months or something, like they've been together for a long time and he just wants to throw it away.

I'd also argue that what she says and what he says to her all depend on the relationship and the people. I've known some people to be in that mind state and emotional state relatively quickly and it doesn't take a year to develop that. There's no set timetable to a relationship and when a person will feel certain things

Agreed, that depends on many things.

But I don't think I'm being nitpicky for asking for one or two more scenes, maybe a dinner scene with his family and girlfriend
