Finally saw this tonight. FANTASTIC movie. This was intense from start to finish and brilliantly acted. The music was great and the final scene was amazing. :wow:

Barely any responses to this thread, but I hope more people check this out.

I posted my thoughts in the dvd screener thread a while back but I thought it was just a solid movie. Definitely great performances by Simmons and Teller, and I like the message and love the ending, but overall the movie didn't quite live up the sum of its parts. But I think I like it a bit better now than when I saw it. Not sure why, maybe because now I can only remember the good stuff and the meh stuff kinda faded from my memories.

I saw in a theater tonight (first fukking showing - this late in the "year" :scust:) and I really really like it. JK might take the best supporting Oscar. It's been a long time since I said this about a movie but it could've been longer, like 20-30 mins longer. Andrew and Fletcher are great together and Andrew and his father work very well but every other relationship feel empty or rushed. Same goes for the inner time of the movie, it could take place in a period of 2 months but if someone said "nah, it's like 6 months+" I'd not be shocked. With more character and world building this could've been the best movie of the year, for me anyway.

I think I might actually agree with you on that. Too much of the movie's thematics were limited to Andrew's story and his alone. What little side characters there are for his character to play off against are nearly non-existent and aren't along for the ride so we can see it affect them (his girlfriend/ex, his entire family excluding the dad). And because of that, the movie never became bigger than just Andrew's story, which prevented it from becoming great.

watched this earlier today...it was good and the performances were great but even as a former sneer drum player (middle school and high school) i didnt see wat all the fuss was about....guess u gotta really be into that shyt to see how its so great but imo it was just a 7.5/10 movie based mostly off performances from the mains and the crazy drumming that brought bak some memories :ahh:

The girlfriend part was the biggest problem. He asks her out, go on one date, one text message and a breakup all in like 15-20 mins and they act like they've been together for months and had deep relationship. Also he's still misses her like he knows "she's the one" in the end :dwillhuh:

We only meet his extended family once at dinner and it had no build-up. At this point there was no indication he dislikes his family since he and his dad get along well and the dinner scene plays out like it should be the 2nd or 3rd time we meet the rest of the family. Just a little dinner scene early with some "Yeah I got into this great music school" with him being kinda dismissed or something because we got no backstory and he explodes on them like he's been waiting his whole life with pent up rage.

Pretty much. And especially towards the end it feels like there's a pivotal scene missing:

because I'd really like to know how his father felt about Andrew still participating in Fletcher's band after what he put his son through. Instead he's in the audience like "whatever" even though it should be a big deal that he came around to letting his son perform and supporting him.

And given the movie's length (I just checked, 107 minutes), there's no reason they couldn't have added like a good 10-15 minutes to develop all those relationships a bit more either.
