Prodigy was only dressed up as MJ, just imagine if Pac had stayed breathing and Hov put an actual ballerina on the big screen :banderas: promptly followed by a picture of a grown man in leotard thong on :banderas: and to top it all off footage of a limp wristed feminine 17 year old crying about the 'b-word' :banderas:

In the Silver Lining
So ole camel puts Prodigy on the screen in Michael Jackson 80s outfit to seemingly embarass him, then proceeds to bring out Michael Jackson himself as a form of praise .......... dude was practicing Duality way back then :wow:

it DEF affected his career without a doubt!! this laid the foundation for the downfall of p's rap high ranking status. and then Nas started bringing it to him and it was all over.

he had no middle gound.

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
It was a brilliant move on Jay's part, who had been getting hit with little underhanded verses from P, who was already beginning the decline into spoken word thugging, for about 18 months, previous. He hadn't said anything specific yet, this was his response, and it was impactful....not jut to P, but Nas too. People thought he got buried, and Jay was just stunting on the whole game at that point. Majority of fans definitely did start looking at Mobb Deep differently, and maybe forever, based on that.

Anyone trying to brush this aside, like some product of an older generations imagination....has some bizarre agenda. It was a defining moment in hip hop, and a major event, shaping the rest of the 2000 era. It's not like I stopped listening to P, or Mobb, and P had been languishing for the better part of 2 years, despite a quality release 'HNIC', summer jam sent them into a slump like Ja Rule after 50 Cent. 'Infamy' was universally panned, and they were an afterthought for years afterward.....truthfully, it took til 'Free Agents' for them to come back..and it still wasn't a triumphant return, just kind of a reemergence. Trying to say 'Takeover/Summer Jam' didn't hurt P/Mobb, is like 'Ether' didn't hurt Jay.

THIS

and this is the MAJOR issue with youngER listeners..

you ask about a certain time... why was this song hot... why was this group hot.. why did this happen.. how did that happen

then when you get answers, IN THE CONTEXT OF HOW IT WAS BACK THEN, you suddenly act like it was 2013 when it happened

no this is 2001... nikkas wasn't googling back stories and fact checking picture dates... nikkas wasn't saying "but it's just entertainment, who cares, he was young" nikkas didn't have 20 new tracks a week, and 30 new artists, and 40 new mixtapes

a rapper would do something, and it would be talked about for a good 3-4-5 months.. a rapper would announce his album dropping 5 months later, and it would drop that exact date, and be listened to 100 times over before you moved on to a new favorite... beef was anticipated.. nikkas would look like crackheads to find that new clue tape with the diss on it, or grab that new source mag with the disses

prodigy came out and called jay-z a bytch in a magazine interview... not an internet website.. a real magazine.. and had EVERYONE waiting on what jay would say... jay was talking bout summer jam and takeover for MONTHS in advantance (nikkas hyped up diss tracks, they actually did sell records off them)..

so when summer jam came... NO YOUTUBE, VIDEO, LIVE FEED.... everyone was wondering what was gonna happen..

jay debuted his new diss track.. coming at nas and P, and when he put that pic up.................. understand mobb deep was KILLERS in everyone's eyes.. they was soooooooooo real.. look at their videos, their subject matter, their persona... they was the toughest thing ever

that pic put P on rick ross status, back when rick ross career would be OVER after that pic... nikkas not even in nyc that day was talking about it for MONTHS.. you couldn't even find a picture of that moment, but everyone knew P was just dealt the death blow

nobody took Mobb deep serious after that. P's hard rhymes was straight jokes and he was seen as a fake.. was he young?? yup... did nobody care?? yup.. cause he was supposed to be super nikka.. hardest nikka out... you was not supposed to dress up and do that at ANY age the way you was talking

how you a thug on juvenile hell, but dancing around at dance school in MJ clothes.... and he didn't just put the pic up in a silent moment.. he was doing a diss that had everyone already going nuts

"when i was dealing weight, back in 88.................. *flashes picture up*.................... you was a ballerina, i got the pictures, i seen them"

it was OVER... like i said no google.. no research.. no explanation.. to the world, P was a ballerina, 5 years before he was a thug.. and during that same time, jay was pushing major weight... and he proceeded to murder him and nas (for the time being) for the whole song

NOW we know the truth (pic was older than 88, it was dance school, it was MJ not a ballerina, etc etc).. but that wasn't the situation or info given THEN.. and mobb deep never recovered

I wasn't suprised cause P already said on infamousstores.com that he used to dance at his grandmas school. I think P said it didn't bother him personally but the fact that the public thought it was a big deal did get to him. I think that's what really fukked with him the most, the public perception. Realistically, unless you're lil mouse or something there is probably some embarrassing childhood photo of all of us that would make people laugh, it really ain't that big of a deal, it's just the way jay did it made it seem a lot bigger than it was

^This x1000

You can tell the cats who are trying to brush it off as it was nothing are either too young to be speaking on it, wasn't into rap then, or just hate dude so much that they refuse to give him props for anything.

the internet
I only read the first page...but if you're saying that shyt didnt affect Mobb Deep you are delusional.

It wasnt even that long ago!
shyt, :hamster: was going crazy during that time clowning the fukk out of P.

I feel old as hell reading this though...I just assumed everyone had memories of that time...but the current generation looks at that the same way I see the LL vs Cool Moe D beef :sadcam:

What did Prodigy have to explain? It was a pic of Prodigy before he even was a teenager at his grandmother's dance studio. Jay came with that childish shyt but it really had no effect on Pee. As usual Jay stans ate it up and acted like it was some type of career ending exposal. Pee's downfall after that was all due to his steady decline in quality raps.

I dont know mayne.. lol

what I think saved him more tho was Jay really wanted the battle with Nas and so did the fans. If Takeover would have just stayed about Prodigy, he would have be done. Yeah the pic was some kid shyt, but it was part of the whole attack which was brutal

anyone that claims that it didnt have an effect is lying/ is too young to remember/ or is a mobb deep stan...... all people talked about was the diss, not the fact that he brought out the GOAT Michael Jackson but the diss.....

when takeover dropped everyone thought it was over for Nas and Mobb Deep.....trust me....... the difference is Nas stepped up to the plate with Ether...

Prodigy left it too late too reply, Im not saying that it was the only reason that Mobb Deeps career suffered but it was definitely a factor that helped damage the mystique and image around them....

for every Jay stan that gets at Nas stans with lines from takeover Nas stans reply with lines from ether...... mobb deep stans can only cop pleas "he was only eight years old at the time" etc......

was the photo childish? yes ...... but it was effective

P said on one of the Infamy track, the camel didn't show up at one of those important Hip-Hop shows at the time, so the Jiggaman was the shook one:umad:

Again:

What DIRECT effect did Jay showing a 1983 baby pic of Prodigy dressed as Michael Jackson have?

Did it make Prodigy write worse raps? Nope. We already established P fell off before 01 Summer Jam.

Did it effect their street cred? Nope. The robbery incidents and Star interview did that.

Did it effect their sales? Nope. By 2001 the Mobbs kind of music wasn't gonna sell anyway.

And LOL at that pic making P Rick Ross status. You're apeshyt crazy right now. Again, Jay calling P a ballerina was just some funny shyt that had lil effect on Mobb Deep. People laughed for a few weeks and didn't give a fvck about it. People were more concerned with what Jay had to say about Nas at that Summer Jam. And btw, Im old enough and from NYC.

Also...if the lack of information and product being put out by artists had consumers and listeners talking about shyt more, and for a longer period, back in 2001, why didn't 2Pac shytting on the Mobb in 1996 have an effect on the Mobb???? That was 5 years earlier, the internet was much less accessible AND Pac was a much bigger artist in 1996 than Jay was in 2001. None of ya'll nikkas is answering that question...because you can't.
